So prices isn't a stickler for me but would you purchase a D3s that has had its shutter repaired by Nikon? The shutter before had over 400,000 on it when it was replaced. The body is still in 8+ shape.

I believe I know my answer but just wanted to hear from a few of you.

Thanks!

Depends on the price. I'd probably buy one with 400k on the original shutter for the right price.

Really, I have a D700 which I do like and use often. I purchased a D500 and image quality just wasn't fully there for me. I look back at my older images and ones that stand out for me are the D3s.

I have shot a D750, D800 and they are okay but I need something for sports as well. Now don't get me wrong I used the D750 to shoot sports and it did do it's job.

Guess I just kinda miss the unibody

I got a D3 in late 2012 that had 281,754. BGN condition for the body but it's still chugging along. Shutter count is currently 309,897 on the original shutter. Price was right at the time.

Granted this includes a six month warranty, but here's something to base your GAS on
https://www.keh.com/shop/nikon-d3s-12-1-megapixel-digital-slr-camera-body-only-black.html

EX -With Battery and Charger - $1,799.00
BGN - With Battery and Charger - $1,479.00

1800 seems pretty steep to me. I wonder what you're not liking about the IQ for sports from the D500? I haven't shot one, but am curious.

To my eye it just seems like the D3s images are better than the D500. And I think because I already have a D700 that maybe I am wanting a full body instead of having to have 2 cameras with grips.

I know the image size is smaller in the D3s but I rarely use video if ever on my camera and all the other stuff is fluff to me.

The Auto focus is very good on the D500. I can't imagine I would lose too much in that regard by going to a D3s.

with that many clicks, I imagine there are other things that may be ready to call it quits soon?

I found one on craigslist locally a few months ago for $1100. I dont have interest but it was a great deal, I told the others on the forum about it in an effort to be nice and was told that was the going rate: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1433511/0?keyword=x#13585836

By that rational your 400k repaired D3s for $1800 is insanity.

I currently have D3s and D800e. And I disagree with trenchmonkey. There is nothing better than D3s at what it offers at that price. So as long as you are sure that's what you want I would go for it.
In terms of price I would think $1600-1650 would be a more fair price for it though.

Something to keep in mind is that within next couple of years (October 2018 I think) Nikon plans to discontinue shutter replacements for D3s. So if your D3s has many shutter clicks you may want to replace the shutter before then if you plan to keep the camera for years to come. So a camera with a brand new shutter may be a good choice.

Your prerogative. I have the D810/D800/D600 as well as the D500/D7200 and ALL their
files surpass what I got out of my D3s. I make a living shooting rodeo & BIF and was glad
to get $2500 for my D3s when I let it go a couple of years ago. It was great at ISO12800
but with all my fast glass now I seldom need ISO6400. Just sayin' there ARE better tools.

You can get a used D3s or D500 for about the same price.

I agree with TM. As much as I loved the D3s (used one for many year) if I had to choose a D3s or D500.

Easy choice: D500

No way. Over at Adorama E- D4 bodies are barely above $2000 and I've seen a few PP sales offering them for $1900.

Just make sure you can reach everything on a D3s. We couldn't. It's the only reason we went with the D4.

I still have a D3s that I don't use much anymore and it's a great camera but I wouldn't pay that kind of money for a high mileage D3s body. As for the D500 not having as good IQ I can't agree. I just shot the ALCS games with a D4s and D500 and the D500 got more use than the D4s. My choice for less cropping. The files IMO were better than anything I've achieved from a D3s in the past from the same vantage point.

D3s FTW.
This is coming from a wedding and portrait photographer who used a D3, D4s, D800, D810, D600

Absolutely not. I'm a big fan of buying used, but those are just too old now. I wouldn't even pay $500.

Parts availability is something that will NOT be fluff.
