I'm with Ralph and alundeb -- get the highest MP body for superior imaging. For me, a used 5DsR, used 24-105L and used 16-34LIS are almost exactly $4k and would keep me busy and happy until buying other quality lenses over time.

Something I wonder about: Some people are very vocal about the problems with Canon not making the 5D IV 8 fps, and how lame it would have been if it was 24 MP instead of 28/30. Yet they recommend buying a 3 fps 20 MP camera with low-end AF to others.

Look at Sony, the new A99. It looks to be a dream camera. 42megs and able to do 12fps. Action, landscape, etc. all rolled into one model. Too bad I'm not invested in them!

But now you can imagine you are! This thread is about starting from scratch. What lens(es) would you get with the a99 II within the 4k budget?

Thats not very difficult to answer. The OP asks for a $4000 setup. A new 5DsR or 5D4 eats away the entire budget. Seriously if my stuff got stolen and I had $4K to deal with I would not buy one of these cameras.
It would be different if after the $4K spending, more budget will appear at the horizon. If so, you're basically composing a new more expensive kit and buy in several steps. Then my choice could be different.
If all I had was $2k to spend right now for a kit that should last for two years I'd probably get a decent Nikon or a 5D2 with some good used glass. Glass is more important than latest and greatest cameras.

But why not even a 5D III?
I disagree about the glass being more important. As long as the glass is decent, the camera makes a whole different difference in everyday use

I personally recommended a 5D3 IIRC. That would be my minimum level body for $4k. I suppose the value of glass depends on individual preference. I shot my good old 5D2 and 5Dc for real and paid assignments within a year ago. I used 70-200/2.8ii, 35L and 85L glass, which I could not have used if I had spent my money on two newer bodies, e.g. A pair of new 5D3s. The IQ coming out of those lenses is stunning even if shot on a 5Dc. This is my personal preference. If you take better pictures with a lower grade lens and a higher grade camera like a 5D3 then by all means get that because the final result is what matters.

Zeiss Milvus 100mm f/2 macro/portrait lens ($1843)
Canon 24-70mm f/4 IS $899
B+W 77mm polariser for the zoom $108
~$1100 for a used 1Ds Mk III and spare battery

This is approximately the core of the system I already have (with the weather-sealed Milvus instead of the older chrome-ring Zeiss 100mm f/2 I do have - so that now the whole kit is weather sealed). I can shoot most of my landscape and botanical subjects with this. Not being able to get out to 200mm is a loss for architecture, and of course there's no wildlife capability and no flash.

At other times I think a 16-35 would be better than the 24-70. You can't do both in the budget (and I don't like used lenses at all).

Me, personally? I'm good with my EOS kit so if 4K landed in my lap to blow I'd add a few ornaments for the pre-ordered a99ii. One would be a dash of the past with a Minolta 400mm APO, the second ornament would be an a-mount 24-70/2.8, the last would be the Sigma 12-24 ART (if they'd make it in a-mount)...4 grand gone in a second

If starting from scratch, I'd get a 5Ds-r and a 16-35/4 IS. If I bought one or the other used, I'd have enough left over for a used Sigma 70/2.8 macro. That would get me by until the next $4K happened along.

I have more than enough Canon glass already, but I would happily spend $4K on a used 5DSR & used or refurb 100-400 II...perhaps for a tad more than $4K, depending on the deal...

You don't say what you want it for... does that 4k include lighting??

For just camera gear,I would recommend a 1ds MKiii, a 70-200 f/4 IS or maybe a 2.8, 24-70 and 100mm macro lense.

If I was rethinking and starting from scratch I may even go with:

2x X-T2, 4 nice primes, a great bag, batts and memory, a new phablet/tablet for mobile editing.

I'd just put it in the bank and wait for prices to drop toward the end of the year. Actually I have about that much set aside now, but am patiently waiting to see which deals pop up.
