There is a Canon lens I'm looking to buy and I have the following 2 options:

Buy an "Open Box" version at $1,209 from Adorama
Buy a Canon "Refurbished" (direct from Canon) at $1,070 (about 11% savings) (no shipping and no tax on both).

Both come with Canon 1 year warranty.

Which option would you choose?

Thank You.

Personally, I've purchased many lenses and cameras from the Canon refurbished store and couldn't tell them from new so if it were me I'd save the 11% and by from Canon.

I have had good luck with the refurbished products. They calibrate them and actually I have found mine to be my best performers. That may or may not be a coincidence.

I would go with the Canon too...factory refurb, factory 1y warranty & free 30 day returns...I would pick that if it was the same price, or even pay a tad more vs. a 3rd party.

Ofc the Adorama "open box" sample will perhaps get the Retail Box & paperwork...the Canon refurb gets a brown box & refurb paperwork, which might be important for collectors or affects the resale.

I'd take the canon refurbished. The open box stuff makes me cautious. I see is as basically used.

I would buy the canon refurb even if they were the same price.

I have bought two lenses for Canon refurb and was more than pleased with both purchases. They get me on sales tax, so that enters into the final price, but the lenses I have recieved from them were as good as new, as far as I could tell. I have no experience with Adorama so I can't comment on them. They have been in business for a long time, and that has it's merits.

I have bought lenses and bodies from canon, all worked beautifully with no issue. By contrast I have had one experience with adorama, and it was ugly.

Canon refurb

By the way, how do you buy a Canon refurb and not pay sales tax? I'm in NY and thought the 9% tax was automatically added.

I'd rather buy from Canon. Who knows what has been done with the open box item. Maybe a customer dropped it while nobody was looking. Then after 6 months if it starts malfunctioning Nikon will state that there is impact damage.

I'd go Canon refurbished if possible. I was told when I bought my refurb 70-200 that they were all bench tested and adjused before being sold again. Whether true or not, I always felt my 70-200 was a little sharper than others.

If you live in CA, how do you buy direct from Canon without the tax? Just interested because I purchase a lot from Canon from CA and they always hit me with the tax.

You are correct. The tax didn't appear until the very last step of the order process so I got that wrong. However, even with the tax, in this instance, the cost of the lens is still less than the Adorama "open box" option so still a savings just not as much.

I have been happy with both Canon refurbished and B&H used. Every so often Canon has a 10% off sale on selected refurbished lenses.

Just asking out of curiosity: In a situation like this dealing with practically identical pieces of equipment, would Adorama be willing to price match?

Price matching is on a case by case basis & usually only to identical items. As I noted above, 'open box' is basically new; it could for example be a customer orders a unit & his wife orders the exact same one at the same time as a surprise. The return could be sold as open box.
For any price match I need to run it past the Purchasing Department, so I need the SKU# from the item on our website plus a link to the other item emailed to me.
