How could it possibly be better than the last version?

The new pricing from Sony, Canon and Nikon is getting a bit ridiculous, especially for those outside the US.

You're looking at $4k after taxes in Canada. That's straight up unaffordable. $2,500 was a stretch for the old one as it was.

Sometimes I wonder if they just keep pushing the prices up to see what the ceiling is, they haven't hit it yet apparently. Someone will buy it.

I wonder if it will have the same focus breathing as the VR II. I think I read that when you zoom all the way to 200 and focus at portrait length, it only delivers around 135. I don't use the 70-200, so not a first hand account.

That is precisely why I got rid of it for the f4 (and the size and weight were factors too). It's ridiculous how huge an effect it has, I did tests on a tripod with both lenses, huuuuuge difference between ~135 and 200 obviously.

Makes some of my Leica stuff look cheap...

Sales numbers are falling off a cliff. The only way for these guys to move forward will be to increase prices a bit to offset lower sales volumes. Without adding a genuine mirrorless contender to their range they will continue to lose market share in a market that is shrinking.

I'm sure it will be a spectacular lens. But it's more likely that the new model has been released so Nikon can reposition its price point than any significant optical differences. It's also possible that a part of the older model went out of production and they needed a model refresh.

Can you guys expound on this any? I've read about this in the past but still have trouble understanding the meaning behind it.

Sure, basically the focal length changes as the lens focuses. Other lenses do this in different degrees. It is the kind of thing that annoys people shooting video a ton because the framing changes as they pull focus.

The 60mm f/2.8d macro lens breathes pretty significantly toward the MFD end.

The VR2 works great and I don't care how the VR breaths.
Half the time I use it for portraits or group shots I am like more than 100' away.

BTW Kurtis, how have you been liking the f4?

You know, I never really used my 70-200 2.8 VR II all that much, really just for ceremonies. The f4 version is way smaller and lighter, and it's almost always sufficient for church weddings (when it's not, screw it, 85 1.4 to the rescue). I will say though, I don't love either the f4 or the 2.8 nearly as much as my 85 or my 50 for that matter. The look it gives just is not the same, and the color renders quite differently as well compared to the primes. One thing I haaaate about both zooms is how poorly they deal with backlight, it just wrecks contrast.

Well they just do what Sigma does with the Art series: Get the best quality possible without looking at the price...

Interesting that they put the zoom ring out on the end of a relatively long lens.
