p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Preparing my expendable 7D for supertyphoon 'Haima'

Supertyphoon 'Haima' with winds of 220 - 305 km per hour is heading our way in northern Philippines. The howler is expected to slam into our islands in the next few hours.

With the precautions and preparations done as regards personal and property safety, I sat down on my desk to prepare my 'expendable' gear, to be ready just in case an opportunity to shoot or film the event safely materializes.

The "suicide combo" is my old 7D and my seldomly used Sigma 18-200 OS.

I locked the zoom at 18 mm, and wrapped the whole gear with a clear plastic bag. I taped the opening through which the strap passed through, and fixed the open end of the plastic bag with a couple of tight fitting rubber bands. The only exposed part of the combo are the end of the lens hood, the front element and of course the strap.

Looks like the combo is splash-proof enough. I can easily see the LCD display through the clear plastic sheet, which is also loose enough for me to be able to operate buttons and controls. I intend to shoot from the side of a building away from the wind, and will just wipe the front element with a soft cloth each time it's drenched.

Here's how my supertyphoon filmer looks:

Hoping the supertyphoon passes our islands with the least possible damage on life and property.

We salute the brave!.. Looks much like what I did when shooting the Tomatina in 2009, but I had separate bags for each of the two lenses because I had to change them during the battle. Not an option in this case.

Be careful, and the helmet advice surely sounds apt.

Thanks, John and Ilya! I have my industrial skull guard, as well as my full-faced motorcycle helmet ready.

That sounds more like it.

...I sat out a couple of cyclones on an island in the Indian ocean that raged on for days, everything imaginable flying by through the air from flip-flops to hunks of houses.

Thanks, Alden and Jim.

In the latest forecast, the winds have slightly increased to 225 - 315 km/hr, and the superhowler will make landfall at around midnight here.

Our tollways have a legal speed limit of 100 kph. Sometimes when I feel there are no radar guns in a highway stretch, I drive as fast as 160 kph (100 mph) for short durations. The force of the wind at that speed at unstreamlined objects is unbelievable. I can't imagine the effect of winds twice that speed at flimsy tin roofs of houses in our islands.

That is going to be serious. I don't think I want to see the resulting damage... At least preparing to do something makes the situation feel less threatening. I am supporting a children's village in your country and hope the best.

Stay safe Romy. I hope you do get some good images to share but I don't know if I'd go out in that kind of a storm.

Well, in any case, no shot is worth an injury, so safety first.

The supertyphoon weakened slightly when it hit the Cordillera mountain range after making landfall. The winds aren't as strong as feared, especially where I'm located (about 200 km south of the path of the eye).

I hope its strength dissipates further in the South China Sea before it arrives in your area, KK!

We have no grid power now, nor DSL service. I'm fortunate we have a backup genset where I'm located. Wireless broadband internet (via a mobile phone company) still works. We are still awaiting for news on what happened to the inhabitants in the areas where the supertyphoon made a landfall, before it was slowed down by the mountain range.

The 7D is expendable, but you are not. Take care.
