I'm interested in this lens, yet I've read about potential focusing problems with it. It all seems a little dubious at this point in that some people report that using the dock will clear up the issue, while others say it doesn't. I suppose it's possible that a firmware update could fix this too? Maybe the only way to find out is to rent one, but just wondered what people think of it here. Thanks.

I have not had any focusing issues with this lens. Besides my 300/2.8, it is the sharpest lens I own. Although you should fine tune every lens, my copy has been fabulous straight from the box on my D500. It was this lens that sealed the deal to buy the D500. And the 1.8 aperture has allowed me to get some shots that didn't always turn out on Friday night football games on the sidelines.

The AF problems that people have talked about is that the outer AF points on a D500 (and perhaps other cameras) are not as accurate with the Art lenses. Apparently this can't. E tuned out without messing up the central point. Everyone seems to agree that the central point is good (or can be made good with tuning).

If you want one, just buy from somewhere like B&H or Amazon with a great return policy. If it has any focus issues exchange it, assuming all your other lenses are bang-on with your camera body(s) and can isolate the lens as the issue.

Could be operator error. I preordered and it's perfect on my
D500/D7200 as well as D810/800 in 1.2 crop mode. I shoot
rodeo and it's quite apparent if there are any AF issues. No dock
no tune on any of my bodies. I opened the box and started sellin'

No issues with my copy either. Matched with my gripped D7200 I am using it for a bit of everything and really enjoying the results.

I rented one with a D500 for several days, and my keeper rate on a fast moving toddler running towards me at f/1.8 was frighteningly high.
