I need to retire my D700 and get a new FX camera. I love the D750 but I hate the ergonomics. I cannot and will not get used to the AF ON button being the same distance as the earth and the moon from where it is on the D700. I'm a back button focuser so it's been bothering me. I've rented the camera several times and it is beautiful in everything it does.

But that damn ergo and controls isn't my thing. So I'm waiting.... hoping Nikon will refresh the 750 series with a D500 body.

Waiting sucks....

the ability to adapt to a situation allows one to work with just about anything now and in the future.

adaptability says you can

I haven't shot the D750, but find it tough to believe you can't just switch the function of the back button to become AF-on

I went from a D700 to D750....no problem at all.... of course it did help that the wife has had a D7K for some time before I made the switch

do it! you won't regret it!

You can but it's not in the same spot, it's further towards the viewfinder. I have big hands and dont like this reach either. I'm not sure I could switch to a body without the AF-ON button without significant complaining.

I shot with 700 this week-end because my 750 is in the shop. Forgot how nice the images looked and how nice it is to shoot above 1/4000 of a second. It would be great to see a real replacement in a D500 body, though that is likely never to come.

If I ever give up on D700's, the D750 is probably my logical next step too. The button difference which drives ME crazy is the (+) and (-) buttons to zoom in/out on the LCD. With D300/D700 the (+) is below the (-), on the D800 and D7000 they decided to swap them. When you've been using something long enough, muscle memory pushes the buttons without you thinking about it.

Why nikon do this I will never understand.

I didn't think I would care for the ergo. either coming from D200/D300, which I loved. Now...it feels great to me. The quality of the images, speed of AF, and high ISO is crazy good, and the back button can be programmed for AF-ON, which I did as soon as I got it. I'm so comfortable with it now that I'm adding a D7200 as a partner. There are some things I still prefer on the other bodies, but...nothing that inhibits my photography. I felt the same way going from an F5 to a D200...it was just weird, but..
I am having the shutter replaced as per the service bulletin, but I think it's an outstanding camera.
I do wildlife, macro, landscapes, and some arch. stuff...just for context.

I am afraid I don't get that.

I shoot a D610 as my main camera and rented a D500 for a weekend. It was seamless, I really did not fumble with any buttons or functions.

Me thinks its a head space problem.

Good luck

I hear your pain. The more you burn into your muscle memory, harder it gets. I have D700 and D810 and the difference of Ergo make me fumble, and go manic when I shoot event and use both body at the same time. Only thing you want to be thinking is subject your are shooting. Ergo can get in the way.

The Keymission360 pretty much stabbed our Nikon hearts at Photokina but that just leaves room for "wow" during next year's 100 year anniversary announcement. Wait?

Never understood all the problems people have switching from one body to another, I typically shoot a D810 and D750 and now the D500 at the same time and know each camera well, once one is in my hand I know where everything is, have no problem figuring out what is where...I think it's just a matter of getting used to it and training your mind to work...It's not like I get on my motorcycle and wonder...damn where is the windshield wiper switch.

On the plus side you now have
Center D-pad = 100% magnification and so many other goodies.

Ever hop on a friends motorcycle that has flipped the shifting to GP style though? Takes a lot of concentration to rewire your mind for it.

You may be waiting years for something that may never happen. The D300s and the D700 were the most comfortable bodies for me, except that the D700 was too heavy. On the D750 assigning the AF-L button to AF-ON is not in the ideal location and the body isn't the most comfortable I've experienced, but neither is a deal breaker given the performance.

To each his own. We all have preferences, then there's non-negotiable aspects that are different for everyone.

The Nikon D750 is my first Nikon DSLR as I shot Canon for several years, so I can't compare it to previous Nikon cameras. However, I'm impressed with the performance of the D750 and didn't have any trouble adapting from another system.

Wow...

We're talking significantly less than an inch difference. I switch between the d750 and d500 and never even notice the difference in AF-ON placement between the two.
