I own two Gitzo tripods with two different style of Gitzo release plates (same size) on them. I am looking for some type of guidance in picking a Nodal Slide rail that will work for panos takes using a MKIII and 24-70mm L lens. The rails are new to me but it is painfully obvious that I need to start using one for the panos i'm taking. I do use Lee filters every once in a while so I would hope one could be compatible to use both together.

remove the Gitzo release plates and melt them into slag

you can add RRS clamps to the heads or get good heads

RRS makes high end rails or try to find a use Novoflex, or many others

a search on rails may prove fruitful, and sjms has posted pics of his

I'm happy with the heads I currently have....You're saying I will need an additional adapter to be able to use the RRS on my Gitzo heads?

A few years back I converted one of my Gitzo heads to Arca-Swiss by removing their camera mount (held by one screw) and mounting an Arca-Swiss clamp. Initially I converted it to RC but ended up with AS a few months later. Opened up a whole world of universal rails and other accessories. Plus I can use the same QR plate for all my tripods.

The length needed depends on the focal length of the lens. A good all around rail is the Really Right Stuff 192 Duo Package with rail and clamp is a perfect solution. Buy it and then do the parallax testing to generate the position settings you need for different focal lengths.

For nodal rail that can easily be expanded for double row panos, Novaflex provides a number of excellent packages.

Something to watch for is the minimum number of degrees you can shift the rail. With longer than 70mm focal lengths the degrees of shift can be as little as 2.5 degrees and most ballheads are not marked in such small increments. This is where Novoflex provides added capabilities.

This equipment is pricey but it is also equipment you can use with any camera you own now and will own in the future. Same applies to lenses for the most part.

I have one of the more expensive models of Gitzo heads. Is there no mounts or rails that will work with the Gitzo head? I also don't really want to spend an arm and a leg to do it.

The MPR-CL II is a good, solid nodal rail for use with any A-S L bracket.

What about using this to be able to just slide and adjust the distance on the tripod?

For what lens, a tele?

Does your body not have an A-S L bracket?

I think my problem is attaching the rail to my existing gitzo heads without having to change them

Get an L bracket and nodal rail at a minimum.

Hejnar Photo makes solid and "less expensive" A-S compatible stuff. Super happy with about 3 clamps and also his 6 inch nodal slide.

Cant help with the Gitzo part...

I could consider getting rid of the head and switching to RRS. Is the rrs clamp system pretty universal amount rail accessories?

Before I try any swapping or reselling I think I'm going to try out this adapter plate. I don't take panos constantly so I'm not sure all the effort to get this changed is worth it.

yes, the rrs clamp system is the Arca-Swiss system, and nearly universal

RRS makes very high quality items for high prices, tho they last a long time and have high resale value

I saw a used BH55 just yesterday in the B/S threads

It is the Arca-Swiss clamp system. Companies like Kirk, Markins, RRS, Wimberley, Hejnar, etc. make numerous compatible devices.

I would recommend grabbing the rrs panning clamp and the rrs 192 rail and clamps package. This would easily set you up to do 1 row Panos. The panning clamp has a set of 3/8" thread in the bottom so with a 1/4" to 3/8" thread adapter you can attach the planning clamp to the qr plate on the gitzo head.

Unfortunately that head doesn't give many options without adding an arca Swiss clamp on top. The panning clamp allows you to use the ball head as a level for the clamp instead of using the tripod legs, much easier.

No matter what you go with for options it is probably going to run you around a couple hundred.
