First one out!
http://petapixel.com/2016/10/17/review-sigmas-85mm-f1-4-art-lens-exceeds-expectations/

As with any Sigma, AF is obviously an issue, some will have to test for lemons and some will not. I don't mind personally, I've had Canon lemons before.

If they were to come out with a series of + size camera bags, this would all suddenly appear absolutely brilliant.

I'm waiitng for the review that actually puts it head-to-head with the current Sigma 85 f/1.4 EX, which is already an excellent lens. Apart from maybe ultimate sharpness wide-open I'm dubious it'll warrant the massive weight increase and huge filters. Bokeh of the EX is already very nice, it's quite sharp wide open and tack sharp @ f/1.6, it focuses better than the 50 f/1.4 EX did and main fault I see is high CA. But i've seen reports the new version isn't a big improvement in this area.

Frankly this was one of the last lenses that needed an update,. These other lenses would be higher priority IMO

24-70 f/2.8 (urgent)
70-200 f/2.8 (urgent)

80-400 (really urgent, it's a dud)

I might be interested in this lens. Still in doubt if i should go with the 85 1.2II and the siggy.

it sounds like a great lens, but I already have purchased the tamron 1.8 this year. No doubt the siggy is sharper, but I usually don't shoot at 1.4 or even 1.8 but above, so perhaps the Tammy will do just fine.

I'd also like to see this review. I've got the EX and have been quite happy with it. The new Art lens would have to be MUCH better optically for me to consider upgrading, particularly given the very large size of this new lens.

That is my thinking too. The Tamron does the job I need from it, and it's much easier to carry. Also, the VC sometimes really helps.

Tamron is 60% lighter, 60% cheaper, completely tack sharp at a perfect F2 aperture for portraits, has IS and is weather sealed

now, if you are shooting a Sony and using IBIS, then this Sigma is way cheaper than the Sony 85G - and the Tamrons don't work that great with either the MC11 or the Metabones

Yikes, imagine that ginormous Sigma 85 Art on an adapter on a Sony! Not for me.

As glad as I am to see an 85 Art, I think they failed to a degree - it is ridiculously big and heavy. However, such weight and size depends on use - if you like the rendering and are a portrait photog. who doesn't have to carry the lens around for hours then it might suit. Likewise if you are a minimalist and you pair this with a, for example, 35 Art. But then you may as well shoot Fuji.

Put it in a rolling case, drive to a location, mount the lens and shoot for 20-40 minutes.

For travel, PJ work... not so much IMO.

The good news is there may be a glut of Sigma 85 f/1.4 EX's on the SH market soon at bargain prices.

If I sell my Sigma 85 it'll be to get the Tamron most likely or maybe even the Samyang 85 f/1.2 if it's good.

When and if I do get to buying a 85mm prime, I'll be choosing between the Sigma EX and the Tamron. The Tamron is becoming more and more likely to be chosen because it's reported to have better IQ.

Frankly this was one of the last lenses that needed an update.

It's quite the opposite if you gauge the *rumors sites: there was a neverending stream of "Gimme gimme my 85A!" Maybe that's why the blurb for the 85 on the Sigma website says "BY POPULAR DEMAND". Well... be careful what you wish for.

These other lenses would be higher priority IMO

A 100-300/4 OS... that'd be my kind of lens! I'd get rid of the 70-200/2.8 L and the extender in a heartbeat. Though I still shoot a lot at 70mm...

Not sure what's wrong with the current 120-300/2.8?

I agree that they failed in making a lens for travel & PJ work. I can't lug this around for hours and hours. But otherwise, likely a very fine lens. Would love to try it for portraits.

I'm surprised to see such a negative reception. This lens is intended to be a class-leading optic. It's sharper, faster to focus, and considerably less expensive than the 85/1.2. Obviously it's not for travel, no more than the (much larger and heavier) 70-200/2.8 series would be. That's what the 85/1.8 (any of them) is for.

Not that I'm in the market for new 85mm for the moment as I'm mostly into wide and am quite content with my Takumar 85/1.9... If I was however then the lack of weather sealing and the failure to provide MO (manual focus override) on late EOS models be some issues to ponder.

Just handled this lens. It is visually very impressive, but it is a really big and heavy lens. It makes the 85/1.2 seem small and light.
