p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · NCAA - Alabama vs Tennessee

Wow, Tennessee fans had big expectations for this game. Alabama wanted to show they deserved the number 1 ranking and have no intention of giving it up.

The 3:30 pm game time meant the game started in full sun, but within a few minutes, the shadows began to creep across the field so that by the 2nd quarter, the field was 1/2 full sun and 1/2 full shade. The auto ISO of the 1dx2 is very good, but it is still a very big challenge to get the exposures and WB right.

Normally, I try to limit my posts to 5 images, but when the number 1 team comes to town, I'll post a few more. Hope you don't mind.

Having only photographed college football for 2 years , I am very impressed with your images . I have learned a lot from studying your images.

In my opinion you set the standard as to what the top end sports photographer should be producing on a consistent basis.

Looking forward to the next set of images

Great clarity on the pics. I have the 1D X Mark II also and I am wondering what your settings were for the first and last image of the first set. The ones with bright backgrounds but the players in the shade. Did you have to resort to manual exposure or was the light too spotty to do that?

What AF settings did you use?

Thanks again, all.

crfrey71 - I had to tweak the 1st one in post as it was underexposed some. Manual mode with auto ISO with exposure comp helped, but with the white uniforms, it was very difficult. The last one was later in the game when pretty much the whole field was in shade, so pretty even lighting and I may have been in full manual exposure then, I can't recall. Also, I shoot raw and tweak as needed.

Oh, also I think case 1 AF for this game and just about everything I shoot.

Thanks Tim! Outstanding work, as well!

I still find the Canon cameras struggle with autofocus in the scenario of the subject in the shade and the background bright, no matter what AF setting or AF points I choose.

That's interesting that you stick with AF case #1.

Do you use EOSiTR?

What AF points do you choose? single, single plus 4 point expansion, etc...?

Nope, had to look it up as I've never used it before. Intrigued though? Have you?

What AF points do you choose? single, single plus 4 point expansion, etc...?

Mostly single plus 4 (80% to 90%), sometimes, single and sometimes I fool around and add more.

I've had EOSiTR work great and then other times not so much. Still trying to really get a firm understanding on it, since it has a sub-mode in the 1D X Mark II that it did not have in the 1D X.

Tim,

I photograph marching band and my challenge is keeping the autofocus, even with limited AF points selected, off the shiny brass instruments. Very hard to do when they play them and the bell of the horn or the valves constantly grab the AF's attention instead. I usually try and select under the horn and choose their chest or stomach region.

For the half sun and shade scenario, which metering did you use? I usually shoot evaluative, but with that scenario, I tried center-weighted, but still not so consistently dependable.
