p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The Many Looks of Gog Lake

Gog Lake was the closet shooting location for us by our hut in the Assiniboine Area and given how new we were to the area (and grizzlies in the area), a shorter walk in the dark was met with little resistance! Approximately a 20 minute hike led to this very dynamic location.

The first two shots were actually taken at sunrise on our last day about 15 minutes apart. Our patience paid off as what was initially just a blistery rainy morning took a rapid, and very brief turn as the sun was able to pierce through and light up the sky while still raining.

Shots three and four were taken on a previous day, again at sunrise, and yet offered very different feeling to the images despite being shot on the same day and about 20-25 minutes apart.

The last shot (5) was taken from the top of the waterfall looking down on Gog Lake. This location can be barely seen in the shots above but it's there if you look close!

Hope you enjoy.

Beautiful work on all of these. The perspective of the last one makes it my favorite.

The first is my favorite, but if it was mine, I would crop out a bit of the sky. The business end of the photo is the bottom up through the color in the sky. The darker blue part at the top seems only to take away from the wonderful texture of the rock in the foreground.

I have been by og lake a number of times and wondered what it would look like as a sunrise/sunset target but never tried it. I was there in the winter when the bears were not worriesome and it did not look like this

Nice colors and exposures. Thanks for sharing. Scott

Thanks for the feedback, Ben. I do like your idea of cropping the top a bit, cheers!

Personally I think Gog Lake, The Towers, the small ponds by the lodge and Niblet/Nublet/Nub peak would all be great spots for sunrise. We hiked out via Wonder Pass as once up there we all agreed that sunrise would be pretty epic, especially with a bit of scrambling.

What time of the winter were you there? Was the lodge open then?

Beautiful images all. Thanks for the backstory too. I always like to know details about how an image was taken. That last one with the long exposure is my favorite.
