Hey guys I'm looking to get extension tubes for my Zeiss 135mm and was wondering which tubes I need to achieve 1:1 ratio macro.

You'd need 101mm worth of extension tubes to do it, since native magnification is only 1:4. Not practical at all; this heavy lens is likely to bend the tube mounts, if not damage the camera/lens mounts, due to excess torque.

A convenient calculator is here:

I agree at that point the torque could be a problem for the lens mount. If you really really want to do it though, a lens support and rods solves that problem at a pretty high cost and bulk.

I'm working on building a more compact and far less expensive solution than the above for supporting heavy lenses without tripod sockets, but it's at least a few months out so that doesn't help you.

Close up lenses are a more practical choice for increasing magnification on long focal length, but of course, you run the risk of added CA...which likely destroys the point.

Perhaps a bellows?

Yep, extension bellows could be the answer - I've hung some pretty heavy lenses off of my PB-6 bellows assembly. Of course it's a lot more stuff to mount on a tripod, etc. depending on what you are trying to do.

You may have better luck with mounting a reversed (high quality) lens on the front of the APO135 whilst it's at infinity. I've also heard of it used as the "infinity correction glass" when using infinity-corrected microscopy and microphotography objectives.

At the same time, if you want to cheat a little and can handle a bit of image degradation (it has plenty to lose, though!), just stick a 2x teleconverter on it. Preferably an APO one, to keep that quality going. Sure, you get a 270mm f/4, but it'll be at 1:2. Use it in crop mode, and you get ~1:1.5 at ~400mm.

I wonder if the lens can perform adequately with that degree of extension.
