With the TC only because I'd forgotten to take it off

Looks like that combo has enough center sharpness to resolve the feather detail. Look really good for a combo that most would be hesitant about.

Great Detail - makes me want to upgrade from the old 1-4 to this even more.

FoCal'd the bodies (5Dsr,7Dii,1DXii) last night. The bare lens was easy peasy. The lens+TC was problematic to say the least. On the 7Dii and 5Dsr FoCal could never find the target yet I could see it in live view clearly on the LCD....yes we had lots of light, went to Lowes and bought even brighter than what we'd FoCal'd with before. It tried with the 1DXii but could never complete the ritual. I think I'll use the old batteries lines up at 45 degrees someday when I'm bored.

James I've got the 1st gen in a-mount and always loved it. I might upgrade it to 2cd Gen in Dec. when the a99ii gets here. It's not so much total IQ but the other things Tamron added/upgraded in this version.

Not that my 500ISii will site idle but sometimes I'm just not in the mood to suffer the weight and there is my motto of good enough-close enough

Here is another from this morning, now don't say anything about halos! If they are there it's LRs fault-default sharpening.

Forgot the EXIF for those interested in this lens-

Looks like the model is quite good getting that type of feather detail with a TC

Jury is still out Morris. I was no more than 20 feet for either shot and don't know if you read but we tried to FoCal the combo last night....no problem with the bare lens but with the TC it was a bust.
I would only use the TC with a zoom when there is no other way, a Hail Mary so-to-speak. But certainly is fun to play with.
Speaking of having fun, I shot with a 20 year old Minolta 500mm reflex yesterday and I had a blast! Having a few telescopes and other mirror lenses I know the limitations (onion bokeh for one) but it seriously focused fast on the a77ii. I know this isn't a thread for it but here is one from yesterday using the super lightweight reflex-

Thanks Ron. I was really surprise-a 20+ year old lens and a reflex-mirror at that! but best of all it doesn't break the back (or bank).
