According to SonyAlphaRumors, there is a "big" Sony e-mount announcement coming next week. No indication on whether it is lens/lenses or body or something else. They give it an SR5, which means they think it is certain.

Whatever it is, I look forward to reading the why it sucks posts everywhere.

A) Too big
B) Too small
C) too expensive (this one for me)
D) but its a Sony!
E) Bad ergos
F) The menus suck (if a camera)
G) The colours suck (if a camera).

My (broken) crystal ball says
A9.

Whatever it is I am sure it will be something I would like but cant afford (my problem, not Sony's).

If it's a body than certainly will be the more recent features like faster buffer, faster processor, faster AF, new menu setup , LSI and maybe a few other things like dual slots. One thing for sure Sony is innovating better than anyone else. So that's always a good sign. But 3 new bodies in 3 months is interesting and at this point 2 of them with current sensors than this one must be a new one. I could use the tax deduction this year. Lol

Given that Canon and Nikon have both already introduced their new pro level cameras for the next few years, and given that Sony seems determined to go head-to-head with Canon and Nikon for dominance in the high end camera categories, I think there is some reason to think that Sony may be introducing their own pro-level camera, the A9 (or whatever they decide to call it).

One of the more astute comments I saw about why Sony introduced the a6500 so soon after the a6300 had to do with Sony's competitive determination to become a dominant camera maker--that Sony brought out the 6500 to compete against and effectively preempt Canon's more serious entry into mirrorless cameras with their new M5 camera, against which the a6500 would compete very effectively but the a6300 less so.

So, that increasingly direct competitive strategy would fit with the big announcement being the A9.

Perhaps "big" is a double entendre, meaning the announcement is big both in terms of significance of the news as well as the physical size of the product...the A9

Wrote this in the SAR comments as well.

Actually, they usually get things right. For example, they had accurate details about the a6500, including its IBIS and touchscreen, several weeks before it was officially "leaked" and announced. And that was a very unlikely product announcement.

i'd love it if it were true, but SAR didn't have advance knowledge of most of the recent releases and has been predicting stuff that hasn't shown up for months. Just a few days ago, they said the A9 (or whatever it will be called) isn't coming until 2017.

In trading we have a phrase that applies elsewhere (but we apply it to ourselves frequently as we are a very self-critical bunch) EVEN A BROKEN CLOCK IS CORRECT TWICE A DAY.

I don't see it being an A9, not with the announcement of that A99 II at Photokina. I would expect them to wait at least until the Spring for an A9. If they are going to update a camera, the one that really needs updating is the A7 II. The sensor and the video in that camera is a bit underwhelming and yet it should be a very good selling camera. If that camera had a 36MP Native ISO 50 4th generation Sony sensor (like the D810) and had 4K video, it would be a lot more attractive. They could also add the touch screen from the A6500. If they priced that at $2,000, which wouldn't be unthinkable as it isn't that new of a sensor, then I think that would be a stellar product.

I think the 16-35 GM is a likely new lens, and a 24 f/1.4 GM could come as well. Then there is 135mm that definitely needs to be addressed. An E-mount revision of the 135 f/1.8 would be much welcomed. Finally on the cheaper side a inexpensive 85 f/2.8 based on the A mount lens I think would sell well and give a cheap trio of 28 f/2, 50 f/1.8, and 85 f/2.8 that would not only be cheap but quite small and still have decent performance.

We'll see, but if they could do all that then I think they would have improved their position considerably.

Shouldn't an A7 MKIII being coming soon based on previous upgrade cycles?

That's a given. Show me a single new camera released that was not too expensive.

Yes, this is very true - likely caused by lower demand in cameras in general manufacturers make up with higher cost for each. In addition Sony is in demand with the mirrorless models, so they don't have any reason to lower the purchasing price. I am amazed how expensive the A7R II still is also as used version.

My wild guess:
1) A medium format mirrorless with newer sensor vis a vis Hassy and Fuji, just in time to spoil their party.
2) Sony RX5, a new RX series camera with a medium format sensor.
My wish:
Small small small lenses, 24/2, 35/2, 85/2.8

To your specific point, even if the announcement next week (which we are almost all assuming they ARE right about) is the A9, they actually would still also be right that it isn't coming till 2017 (unlike the a6500 which will be available before Christmas). They are a rumor site, but within 2-4 weeks of something happening, I find they often get it down pretty well. YMMV.

Yes, this makes sense also. The A7II could sell well and it is very long in the tooth.
