p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Bumbles Through Oly 4/3 50mm f2

Having shot some flowers in sunlight, at f8 or f11, I decided to try some insects, on those flowers, at more-realistic apertures, in the case of the selected images, f14.

At ISO 400, one of my regular settings for full flash, the shutter speeds were 1/250 and 1/320 second, respectively. This was an exercise in trusting (but carefully watching) AF. Most of the results were near misses on the focus and a stop smaller should have nailed them. Anyway, these two images are very encouraging.

The first image has been cropped by nearly 50%, the second by about 30%.

Olympus OM-1 (aperture priority, IS 5 way), MMF-2 adapter, Olympus Digital 50mm 1:2 Macro ED, hand-held.

interesting - I may move to m43 for macro uses

is this the old film camera OM-1? or is it a new m43 digital body?

Thanks, Brian.

The lens offers a more lifelike perspective on m4/3 than the Kiron 105mm.

It is on the EM-1 (original version, version 2 out about now). The lens has no fully manual controls so I can't even use it on my Sony A7R without an expensive adapter, if one exists. The distance/focus has a preselection option but that works only when the camera is switched on. I can't see it having any useful function on a film camera.

I recommend m4/3 for macro, not only for the one stop DOF advantage but for the much smaller files. The format will also accept the largest range of legacy lenses (manual function only). For example, see my high magnification Schneider HM40 images (more tomorrow).

Thanks, both of you.

I think the white petal between the harsh light of the sun and the subject did a good job of diffusing it.

I have some hoverflies from this session in which the above factor may not have operated. I wil probably post them tomorrow.
