Found a new vantage point up on the Santiam Pass last weekend. I love shooting in this burned area, the ghost trees are especially interesting in monochrome. Hayrick Butte is a tuya, a type of volcano formed when lava erupts under a glacier or ice sheet and then melts to the surface and pools, leaving a flat top with steep rock sides. Black Butte is a stratovolcano, built up from many layers of lava, tephra, pumice, and volcanic ash. Pentax 67 165mm and 90mm, red filter and polarizer on Pan F. Feedback always welcome.

Heron,

Nice set!
Pan F is a favorite.
I slightly prefer the 1st for the geometry of the cone with "ghost trees" sort of mimicking the cone

Thanks Dan, I find Pan F perfect for these high contrast scenes. Can't wait to get back to this spot in the snow. Always appreciate your picks and reasons.

Interesting BW images Heron, I especially like the 1st one with the more prominent vertical lines.

Thanks Lazlo, these large fires are more extensive than they used to be because of decades of overzealous suppression but they are still an important part of the natural cycle of life in these areas. It doesn't really show in these shots but there is lots of new growth throughout the burned area.

I like the framing you got with that low angle in the second shot.

A neat view, Heron, that I remember well from our trip there. The angles in the 1st make it a winner for me.

Reminds me of Yellowstone when I visited there, in the early nineties ...
The first one for me, a dramatic, desolated view, ad infinitum ...

Fine work!
I prefer the comp of the first and the larger areas of high contrast in the second.

Thank you, I had to keep hiking out that ridge until I found just the right gap in the trees.

Thank you for you pick and comment Santiago, these burned areas can be found throughout the Oregon Cascades, this one is from 2003.
