I've owned almost all canon's wide angles.. I would get the 17-40 used (it's a great value) and see how you like it. if you have a larger budget, find yourself shooting wide a lot, or if you demand higher IQ (or IS), then upgrade to the 16-35 f/4. it's much better and is about ~60% more.
