Wow!
How do you communicate the nude idea to bride and bridesmaids?

If the guys are fit, do some underwear only shots to give the girls some eye candy. Every girl wants to show off her hot new husband and make all the friends jealous...

So THAT'S why Tony took so many nude photos of me a few years ago.

Depends what getting ready means?
In the midwest it was always a crap salon and a rather boring/ stressful time.
In Colorado we do all kinds of fun stuff and it is much more laid back.
The best weddings are the ones where we can really capture peoples personalities. I LOVE doing super long extended wedding weekends because I can capture people away from the stress of the actual wedding day.
Take Tony Hart's wedding as an example:

Perhaps one of my favorite actual "getting ready" shots. The French hair artist and dress maker were so tickled by Tony's wife looking

I can vouch for the midwest tradition of boring cramped salons in strip malls with mediocre light at best, but there are alway surprises. At very least, it is a good time to chat with wedding party and build rapport, maybe even learn some personalities and names. I also do dress, rings, and other details when possible during this time. Not my favorite, but it is a nice way to ease into the day and not just come in guns blazing.

Getting ready is one of my favorite parts of a wedding to shoot. I love the challenge of making great pictures if the location is less than ideal. Plus, the nervous energy of last-minute prep is infectious.

I still think you should have put on clothes for the ceremony.

That's the French Canadian way.

Also, Scottish I hear.

That right there. It makes such a difference when the rest of the bridal party has a chance to get to know you, and when you have all their names down it makes giving instructions (or friendly razzing) later much easier. I find when I just show up and everything starts rolling, the connection with the wedding party never really happens and it makes other parts of the day more challenging. You get viewed more as an interloper than a part of the group.

You know you can't come on here and say that with no backup. Share how you handle it.

I do the sneak in/out for other detail shots.

Sorry, just saw this and wanted to get some samples together. It's our favorite time because there are typically no expectations from the clients. Usually they have an idea of what they want throughout most parts of the day. It's a good opportunity to surprise them and get to flex the creative muscles a bit.

Regarding 'difficult' situations... That's kind of what we're here for, isn't it? Obviously everybody loves when all is beautiful and perfect but I feel a lot more fulfilled when we can make the mundane look awesome.

We do our best to manage expectations of getting ready just like (if not more than) other parts of the day. We also split up 50/50 for them. Amy shoots the guys, I shoot the girls. So any guys shots below are hers... Here's a few from the last few months...

Maybe preps are different in the US but I love doing them. I love the creativity with all the details shots. The dress, flowers... SHOES... I go nuts over shoes. My assistant is fab and just knows what I am thinking so is fab at setting a lot of these up on her own.

I wouldn't say it's my favourite part of the day, but I love the getting ready part.
