I can vouch for the midwest tradition of boring cramped salons in strip malls with mediocre light at best, but there are alway surprises. At very least, it is a good time to chat with wedding party and build rapport, maybe even learn some personalities and names. I also do dress, rings, and other details when possible during this time. Not my favorite, but it is a nice way to ease into the day and not just come in guns blazing.
That right there. It makes such a difference when the rest of the bridal party has a chance to get to know you, and when you have all their names down it makes giving instructions (or friendly razzing) later much easier. I find when I just show up and everything starts rolling, the connection with the wedding party never really happens and it makes other parts of the day more challenging. You get viewed more as an interloper than a part of the group.
