The TDP lens test for the new EF16-35mm f/2.8L III compared to the older version II is now available& posted here.

And when compared to the f/4L IS see here.

The results look amazing!

The new lens seems to perform best at 16mm however appears to vignette more wide open at that focal length compared to the older version II lens. The performance difference is less noticeable at other focal lengths.

I have a copy of the lens and I am very impressed with corner sharpness at 16mm and F2.8. It's so much better than my mkll.

Nice looking lens if you need the 2.8 but at F4 they look almost identical and one ha a brilliant stabiliser.
As much as I love buying new glass I can't see a reason as I don't need the 2.8 that wide.
nice looking lens but not for me...

Massively better than the mk II, but not so much better than the f/4L IS, which looks like a bargain.

Corner performance is way better at 2.8 than the F4 is on F4, but still not worth over double the premium.

As much as I love 2.8, I think I'll be buying the f/4is.

The times I use 2.8 and ultra wide are so minimal that I would suck it up, bump the iso, or lower the speed to get it with the f/4.

I considered selling my mk2 and buying the 3, but I think I'll sell and buy the is.

For astrophotography, where corner to corner sharpness is important wide open, I'd say this is an impressive lens.

According to TDP neither the 11-24L nor the 14L II can reach the corner performance of this new zoom at 16mm f/2.8... not even the Zeiss Milvus 21!

But yes, the f/4L IS is still an excellent lens at a bargain price.

The new lens looks excellent.

Looks like the f/2.8 lens has a small advantage at the largest apertures, but is roughly the same at smaller apertures. Folks who need f/2.8 will like it, though folks who mostly do stuff like landscape may not find it to be a great value given the outstanding performance (and lower price and smaller size) of the f/4 lens.

These results are impressive indeed.

I'd like to see a comparison between the Canon and Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC before my Tamron sells!

Wow! I was comparing it to the 16-35 f/4L IS at f/4 and, dang, that is a sweet lens.

It's not a bargain! It's f/4 (four!) and though it has IS it will not produce as shallow DOF nor will it have as pleasant bookeh, if the Canon MTFs are right.

You go ahead and tell Canon to jack up the price on this second tier semipro lense! ;-ppp

It is a "bargain" if you don't do the sort of photography that requires f2.8 at ultra wide focal lengths and which may benefit from IS.

All I can say is I tested the mklll and Ziess 15mm at F2.8 with the brick wall test and I struggle to differtiate between the 2. Remember the the mklll is a zoom and the Zeiss is a prime lens.

Unfortunately the 16-35III is only tested on the 5DsR while the 15-30 was tested on the 1Ds3, but the difference is pretty clear.

TDP - 16-35III vs Tamron 15-30
