p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Your favorite lens rendering...?

I know this question isn't exactly new and I'm a bit surprised about myself to ask it. Nevertheless I'm very interested in your very subjective opinions about what's the lens with your most favorite rendering. With "rendering" or "drawing" I mean the sum of properties a lens has (the "signature" of the lens) like sharpness, bokeh, contrast, coating implications, performance by aperture, flare resistance, CA, etc.. A lens with your favorite rendering should make images that stand out in your opinion because of the lens characteristics which sometimes may overshadow the quality of the image itself. Feel free to post examples or link to examples from others. Please tell me about your Top 3 lenses you have experience with and additionally (if they differ) the Top 3 lenses you know from images from other photographers.

Here are my favorites (tomorrow the list may be different ):

Top 3 lenses I have experience with:
1. Minolta Rokkor 58 f1.2: Love the dual bokeh personality at f1.2 and f2.0.
2. Zeiss ZE or C/Y 21 f2.8: Like it for the colors, microcontrast and reliability of the rendering, especially at f5.6, but also wide open
3. Canon 135 f2.0: technically not the best lens in its class, but I admire the combination of sharpness and amazing bokeh between f2.0 and f2.8.

These lenses are far from being my most used lenses, but that's not the point here...

Top 3 Lenses judged by images from others:
1. Zeiss Otus 55 f1.4: perfect sharpness and CA control combined with wonderful bokeh
2. Leica 50 f0,95: DOF wide open...
3. Zeiss Otus 28 f1.4: I love wide angle photography with reduced DOF and this seems to be the best lens in class for that application.

Favourite 3 at the moment.

Leica S summarit 120mm f2.5 APO - Stunning wide open. Stunning stopped down.
Sony ZA 135mm f1.8 - A good reason to shoot Sony, just for this lens alone.
Leica 50mm 0.95 ASPH Noctilux. - Especially good on the Leica SL.

Honorable mentions: Canon EF85L, Sony ZA 85mm 1.4 planar, CV 75mm f1.8 Color Helliar, Leica S 70mm f 2.5 Summarit, fuji XF 35mm 1.4, Fuji XF 56mm 1.2 APD.

I prefer lenses that don't impart a flavor to the image, they just project the image faithfully onto the sensor. Optical properties I want to avoid include any of the chromatic aberrations (though modern processing software can correct for lateral CA with varying degrees of success), flare and harsh bokeh.

current favorites are:

Leica 280mm f/4 APO-Telyt-R

Canon FD 500mm f/4.5 L (with correction for lateral CA)

My favorite three at the moment are:

Zeiss Loxia 21 f/2.8 - I always loved my ZE 21 f/2.8, but I like this lens even more. A similar rendering, but the milder distortion is appreciated.
Leica M 28 f/1.4 ASPH - I only recently got this lens, but I am surprised by how much I like the bokeh. I really like the crispness of the rendering too.
Zeiss Otus 55 - I really like the transparency of this lens and the phenomenal crispness it produces.

3 favorites from others:

Leica S summarit 120 f/2.5 APO - just a gorgeous well rounded lens.
Leica M 50 Noctilux - The separation of a subject from the background with this lens has always set it apart for me
Leica R 280 f/4 APO - I have always loved the colors, clarity, and ultimate sharpness of this lens

Leica R 90 Summicron (non apo). Bokeh is smooth and suits portrait shooting perfectly.

C/Y ZF 28mm f2 Distagon. Ming Thein said it best that this lens allows a cinematic rendering
Brilliant City by Jun Zheng, on Flickr

Metro Terminal Lujiazui by Jun Zheng, on Flickr

ZF 21mm f2.8 Distagon. For landscape this lens delivers the punch, in terms of contrast, sharpness, and micro contrast.
The Coat of Winter by Jun Zheng, on Flickr
Kiyomizudera by Jun Zheng, on Flickr

As for lenses I haven't used yet, the 35mm M Summicron pre asph gets talked up a lot regarding its bokeh. I would love to try it sometimes.
ZF 135mm f2 apo, good lens all around.
Leica R 80mm summilux, a better version of the 90 summicron maybe?

Rokkor 58 f/1.2: Great bokeh!

Top 3 Lenses judged by images from others:

Loved the rendering I got from the Sigma EX 50mm f/1.4 wide-open (the old, non-art version). The combination of enough sharpness, soft bokeh and a certain glowing character gave me beautiful results. Really medium format-like.
I might be biased since I've grown as a photographer loving my first fast prime on fourthirds and APS-C canon: the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX (and the 50mm is like a 30mm on steroids).
I wish Sigma would make a FE version of this lens, hopefully a bit smaller/lighter.

Right now one of the lenses I'm liking more is the Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 WR. I find the way it renders spectacular. It's hard to explain, I don't know if I would call it a zeiss-like 3D effect, it just accentuates the volume of the elements of a scene really well. If it were a stop faster on APS-C or a full-frame 35mm lens it would be legendary.

1. Rokkor 58/1.2: I like the way you're able to isolate a subject at a distance + the OOF quality (and probably also the transition to OOF).
https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8165/29647240362_829a7fed2f_o.jpg

2. C/Y 35/1.4. Same as the Rokkor, really, only being a 35mm.
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7340/27120998111_d7e6d40515_o.jpg

3. PL 25/1.4. This lens' rendering really impressed me. A reason to get a m4/3 camera IMO. A nice, smallish 50 mm equv. with great rendering.
https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1457/23975148430_e23c7ee847_o.jpg

As to what I've seen from others, the way Leica lenses render starts to grow on me. I like the more subtle look compared to Zeiss, but still with plenty of micro-contrast and pop. Probably why I liked the PL 25/1.4 so much.

Hard choices!

Leitz Summaron M 35/2.8 - moderate contrast, clean rendition, great bokeh
CZ Sonnar 100/3.5 C/Y - higher contrast, benchmak Sonnar b/g blur
Rokinon 135/2 - transparent rendition, ultra performance (including bokeh)

Summaron 35/2.8:

Stand outs from my lenses:

Nikkor 300/2.8 AIS EDIF

I have a bunch of pretty nice ones, like the 75 Lux, but these two consistently knock me off my chair

Favorite three at the moment:

1. Zeiss Loxia 21 2.8

2. Zeiss ZM 35 1.4

3. Leica 50 Summicron-R E55

Next three lenses on the list are C/Y 100-300, Leica 90 Elmarit-M, and maybe Leica 28 Elmarit-R E55, maybe C/Y 28 2.8 if I can't stomach the crazy price of the Leica.

Top 3 lenses I have experience with, in no order:
- Zeiss 50mm f/1.7 Planar (C/Y) - This lens is great for separation, with the subjects standing out more than any other 50mm lens I've used at the same aperture. So much pop, it's magic at f/2.8. Shame it only has 6 aperture blades.
- Sony FE 28mm f/2 - Love this lens for people, especially kids. Something about the people images it makes stand out, even to non-photographers.
- Minolta MD 35-75mm f/3.5 - the only zoom I use. Something about it is compelling. I don't take it out often, but I start culling/reviewing images I always think "why don't I use this lens more often?"

Top 3 Lenses judged by images from others, in no order:
- Sony RX1
- Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 (C/Y)
- Leica Summilux-R 80mm f/1.4
