I just received a Samyang 14mm f/2.8 (current production) and it performs well when stopped down to at least f/8. However, wide open it leaves MUCH to be desired. I've tested the lens carefully for element tilt or de-centering and I see no evidence of it. It simply appears as though there's a TON of spherical aberration wide open. Included below are several 100% crops from my D300 comparing f/2.8 to f/8. I have little experience with very wide lenses to judge if the performance is typical of such lenses.

Is this level of performance typical for this lens or did I receive a particularly bad copy?

I don't have your lens, but I do have a Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 ZF.

I used this tool to compare your lens to mine. Have you tried it? From this, yours looks in the zone.
