p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Were to buy the Canon 85mm 1.2 ?

So I think that after careful consideration, I want to breakdown and purchase a Canon 85mm 1.2. This being the case, where do you recommend I purchase it?

B&H has it for $1,900
Adorama has a reburbished for $1,700
NJAccessory.com has it for $1,609
Digital Rev has it for $1,789

B&H and Adorama are known to be trustworthy. How are NJAccessory and Digital Rev?

Canon sometimes has it on their website refurbished but who knows the wait. Is there any good reason to not get a refurb?

Finally, when is the next big Canon sale that will include this lens? Is it usually around Thanksgiving Day?

Thanks!

If you're going to buy new, use Greentoe. Google it.

But don't discount buying used from the Buy & Sell board here. I didn't see any for sale at the moment, but many seem to have sold in the past couple of months around $1400. I buy all I can from here

Does a refurb from Adorama come with a Canon warranty? I've only ever bought refurbs from Canon and would be hesitant with third party service.

Have to admit that Canon refurbs this year have been very scarce. At least for the lenses I have been interested in. Last year there was far more stock.

If you are willing to be patient, Canon offers refurbished items from time to time. Do a search for 'Canon refurbished lenses' and you should get a hit on the Canon Direct web store.

Adorama does a 90 day on their refurbished. I bought my 85 1.8 from them and haven't had any issues. Granted, I hardly use it..😎
If you don't mind waiting, that lens does pop up on the BST board now and then. If you need it now, I'd try canonpricewatch and see what they can do.

Canon just had a sale on refurb lenses and had the 85 f/1.2 for $1439. It is out of stock now, but if you can wait, it will come around again.

This is likely the route I want to go. I need to get it this week though.

Lot of version 1s available used.

With mkII you get a newer CPU, 1.8 times faster autofocus, and upgraded anti-reflective lens coatings to reduce chromatic aberration, ghosting, and lens flare.

That will be at a more than 2x price premium (mkI models can be had for like $600, mkII are usually around $1400). I am NOT saying it is or isn't worth it, I'm just putting it out there in the interest of full information.

Adorama has one in E+ condition (Excellent+) for $1600...but the ones that pop up in Buy & Sell typically go for like $1400.

[eta] Here is Adorama for $1700, but not refurb or used, just open box - http://www.adorama.com/ca85122afuob.html?utm_source=rflaid64393

You could buy an 85L MKI and an 85 F1.8 for much less than an 85L MKII. With the combo you get the typical 85L images at F1.2/1.4.With the 85mm F1.8 you get fast focus (faster than the 85L MKII) and light weight utility.

Best to think of ANY 85L as a speciality lens to be used wide (or very near) wide open. Otherwise, the smaller/lighter/faster 85mm F1.8 is superior. Somewhere around F2.0-F2.5 both lens's IQ is near identical and your "Cannonball" becomes a heavy, slow focusing liability.

Be careful with 85 1.2 L first version.

I am sure it is still a very nice lens but the oldest of them are even older than my FD 85 1.2 L.

I would definitely buy refurb or used. Most issues, in my experience, appear very quickly.

Buy here, pocket the difference...invest in insurance.

There's also LensAuthority. They're part of LensRentals and handle sales of their retired rental inventory. While there isn't currently an 85LII available from them (their price indicates $1550, but will depend on condition), if you weren't in a rush, it would be another option to consider. While their prices aren't as good as from the B&S board, they do apparently inspect all of their gear after each rental, including optical performance, which would imply greater reassurance that the buyer won't get a lemon.

Thanks. That is still more than $100 over the Canon Refrub price and Canon comes with a 1 year warranty.

The listed price for the items on Canon's refurbished store do not reflect the state sales tax, so that $1440 price is just to get users to go to the store. The real price is around $1500-$1600 depending on your state tax rate.

Here's their information on taxes. https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/terms-of-sale

Last time I went to buy a $970 lens, the end price was around $1070 including AZ taxes.

If you're looking for the best price, I'm going to recommend LensAuthority. Unfortunately, they don't have any in stock at the moment, but when I have seen them, their 85 1.2 IIs were around $1400-$1500. They do a wonderful job packing their lenses for shipping and I would definitely recommend them. Fast shipping and top notch service.

Thanks! So on a different note, I see that they have the Zeiss 1.4 Planar for Canon. How does that stack up with the Canon 1.2?

If you need AF (and at the widest apertures, you *want* it), then it doesn't. If you are looking for the f/1.2 look that the Canon gives (which is more than just being f/1.2), it doesn't.

The Zeiss lenses are far from 'bad', and the current Milvus is a standard-setter in its price class, but on a Canon body the 85/1.2L I/II are it if you're looking for that level of focus isolation.

Another option. If you are fine with manual focus but want the 1.2, there is always the Mitakon 85 1.2 in EF mount and you can save some money too if it is acceptable to you.

"B&H has it for $1,900
Adorama has a reburbished for $1,700
NJAccessory.com has it for $1,609
Digital Rev has it for $1,789"

You can also try CanonPricewatch.com and e-mail for their street price program.
DigitalRev is grey market, comes with their own 1 year warranty, they ship from Hong Kong, 3-5 business days.

Best of luck.
