p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon 200mm f2 - Best way to carry?

Hello everyone! I'm pretty excited... just bought the 200mm f2 VR2 after lusting for it for quite some time. Was wondering for those you who have had or still have this lens... what has been your preferred method of carrying it?

I have a Hejnar lens foot coming tomorrow for it. http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/product-p/h102.htm ( Who have the best customer service ever ) This will be roughly five inches long and allow me to wrap my fingers around it to use as a handle... good for short term carrying, but I'm thinking more for longer term such as when you're out walking and scouting for the perfect spot to take the photo. Do you prefer a sling type, such as Black Rapid or Sun-Sniper Pro, or Peak Design, etc. or some kind of case where the lens with body attached can be slung over the shoulder, etc.

So, what seems to work best for all?

Many thanks,
Don

I have one of these... works great. Better than the plate alone for sure.

I sold my 200... so I would be willing to sell it.

PM if interested.

Nikon LN-1 strap SEWN to prevent accidental unraveling. This strap is made especially for superteles.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/261517-REG/Nikon_4151_LN_1_Lens_Strap.html

For shorter distances, I carry the lens with this strap across my chest. For longer trips, I put it in a backpack.

I cannot fit my fingers around the 3rd party plate on my 200 2.0. It's just too close to the lens.

I carry mine at all times with the black rapid strap....even stays in the bag with the strap....
the strap is attached to this. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/555485-REG/Kirk_QRC_1_0_QRC_1_Quick_Release_Clamp.html
then attached to a RRS foot on the lens.
As backup in case the kirk clamp were to come loose I have this http://www.adorama.com/otsc9.html
which is attached from the BR strap to the lug on the lens....
I can take a picture of it later if you'd like.

I carried mine in the Nikon supplied bag (with the body mounted) but use the Kirk Super Grip when I shot. It is extremely useful. I highly recommend it.

I have both the Kirk Super Grip and the Small Rig "Camera Lens Support" handle.

The Small Rig is available on Amazon for only $59. It comes in many attachment modes so be sure to get the Arca Clamp version.

I believe the Kirk Super gGrip is discontinued. The Kirk replacement is not (to my mind) as good.

I've used this BlackRapid strap back when I owned a chubby.
It's very durable and won't hurt your shoulders after shooting a wedding with it all day.
I sold the lens but I still have the strap. I use it once in a great while with a 70-200VRII.

Thank you chuhsi1

A couple questions for you if you don't mind?

1) With all the weight of that lens/body hanging and being supported only by your waist, is it uncomfortable at all or make you feel like you'll need a chiropractor adjustment after a day of use?

2) So I'm assuming that with the spider pin screwed into the lens foot weather it be the RRS or the Hejnar, I wouldn't be able to use it on my tripod then?

Thank you again for your reply:
Don

Thank you Ryder for your reply! This looks like a great option to me for transporting my body/lens (and possibly having a couple other primes as well) from home to my general shooting destination. But once I'm there. and walking about scouting for various ideal spots to shoot, would I want to be carrying all of that with me? Maybe at that point a sling or spider belt would then better utilized?

I have to give this more thought

Thanks for sharing the Taxi with me. I think I could find use for that!

I've been doing that today... or even cradling like a baby. I certainly don't want to do that for too long a period of time though I'm getting to old to be carrying babies, er I mean chunky lenses around like that all day

Hi Don,

That looks interesting. My Hejnar lens foot will be here tomorrow. I'll see how that works first. Thanks for sharing the link with me though as I was not even aware of these

Thanks Will. Another mention for the Glass Taxi ( must be well liked! ). Now that you mention the BushHawk, I seem to remember coming across a post some time ago with you talking about how much you liked using it. Thank you for refreshing my memory about that. I will investigate that further

Which 3rd party plate are you using? I'll be receiving my Hejnar foot plate tomorrow. I'm hoping that it will work as a good handle.

Thank you Andre for your reply! That looks interesting as an option. I also came across this as well...

I wonder which device would be most effective?

Thank you again, Andre for sharing your method with me
