Took this this morning: an egret wading in the Scioto River.

This is a stunning moment you captured Jordan. There is a bit of subject confusion between the egret and the log and rock on the left side. The subject indicates this is about the egret and if this is what you want then you might want to consider cropping off the left side at the rock.

Nice work Jordan. Did you get any others zoomed in a little?

Thanks. This was as close as I could get...didn't have anything longer than my 70-200 with a 1.4x with me.

Beautiful Jordan, but I do agree a tighter crop could put more emphasis on the heron ~ Ron

I see what you are saying, though I think the long shot helps establish a sense of place. The tighter crop is nicer to see the heron and details of the mist, but I think it loses a bit of the wonder of the long swath of light surrounded by shadow (also, this limits how large I can print, as the resulting crop is only 6MP):

Of course, there's good old fashioned image manipulation too:

A wonderful image and 2nd or 3rd versions do bring more attention to the heron...the first introduces the loch ness monster in the form of the log...and whilst it is still a very strong image, removing it one way or another substantially improves the final result. Of course this is only IMHO.

I can see the attraction in your first image, but I agree with the others that the strange log is a distraction that does more harm than good for the composition of the image. To me, your tightest crop is the strongest image--it still has plenty of the "place" factor, and provides better focus on the prime subject: the heron. In fact, I think "place" is stronger in this tightest crop because you see more of the detail in the vapors and textures. Although I often dismiss the dogma of thirds in compositions, it works well here in the bands and position of the heron.
