I can see the attraction in your first image, but I agree with the others that the strange log is a distraction that does more harm than good for the composition of the image. To me, your tightest crop is the strongest image--it still has plenty of the "place" factor, and provides better focus on the prime subject: the heron. In fact, I think "place" is stronger in this tightest crop because you see more of the detail in the vapors and textures. Although I often dismiss the dogma of thirds in compositions, it works well here in the bands and position of the heron.
