I for one am very excited about this lens release, much more than the body itself. I love the 24-105 focal length for walkaround but the first version's image quality deterred me from having one in my kit. I have one of the new versions on preorder and if the image quality is sharper and the lens a much better performer I can see this being a very popular lens.

The 24-105/4 II will be a popular lens in any case. They should start shipping on October 31 by which time Adormama and the BH will be open.

Besides the wicked vignetting at 24mm, what was so wrong with the original?

I probably will eventually. Unless it's about the same as the original. Then I'll probably get something else. After kicking myself for selling off the original.

If it's shown to be an appreciably better performer than the v1 yes, I'm interested, but it'd would have to be pretty good to make me want to leave the 24-70L II at home. But ther are times the extra 35mm and IS are most welcome, so it's hard to see me resisting for too long unless it's still got poor edge/corner performance and barrel distortion that can be seen from the moon.

Yes, 24-105 is a very useful range for events and such. When you don't always have control over the shooting distance, or you don't have time to change lenses quickly to fit the circumstances. I've done some event shooting with the 24-105 and it gives you a good deal of flexibility despite its modest imperfections.

When my nephew got married, and at a few other friends' weddings, I donned the 24-105 on whichever camera I had at the time and operated free-style at the reception. I left the pro shots up to the pros, and conferred with them ahead of time so that I wouldn't be in their way (after all, they were the ones with the knowledge and who were being paid). In each case, I got plenty of good shots, some semi-staged, most more candid. It's a great lens for that kind of situation.

I ordered mine and paid a deposit, the first day that orders were accepted.

No. I often find myself in lowlight where f4 is unusable. So although less convenient, I prefer the infinitely more powerful combination of a 35mm 1.4 and 100mm macro.

On purpose?

Probably not. But if I get a 6D II and that's the kit lens (as opposed to the crappy non-L 24-105 or the very good 24-70/4L), then probably.

I feel the same. It's not perfect but at least my copy performs wonderfully and its main lmitation is being an f/4 lens. I prefer the 35/85 prime combo though.

No one should cares about vignetting, that's a correction that has no effect on IQ and is trivial, but the over 4% barrel distortion at the wide end was the main issue, but corner performance was relatively poor too.

I don't expect the 24-105L II to be 24-70 II good, but I would hope barrel distortion is reduced 30-50% and corners and edges are improved. At least Sigma 24-105 quality would be fine.

I recently traded my 24-105L I for an almost brand new 24-70 II.
If the 24-105L II will prove to be as good as the 16-35 f/4, then I may consider it, since the extra range and IS can be convenient for me. Even in that case, I will wait for a good deal, either a camera/lens kit or somebody who sell it after breaking the kit.

I can't see having both the 24 105 and the 24 70 2.8 II. Since I already have, and am quite happy with the latter I can't see that I would look at this new lens with much interest. Especially since I use my 24 7 2.8 II at 2.8 most of the time.

Over the years, I've purchased 3 copies of the v1 lens and still have the best of the three in my kit. It is a really nice copy and can produce attractive results. The lens is a very easy, low stress lens to use. I haven't really used it since buying the 24-70 II. So the 24-105 II will be a lower priority for me. But if it turns out to be a compelling upgrade, I will try and find a way to pick one up. I've noticed that Canon didn't offer a kit discount on the lens with the 5D IV ... all my prior 24-105's were picked up as kit lenses. I will be on the sidelines reviewing lens performance information and watching for price decreases or discounted kit deals. One area I hope to get some info on is how does it performs on the 5DSR vs V1 and 24-70 II.

Yes, that is what I am looking at. I'm hoping it's better than the others for landscapes on the 5DsR.

I sold my 24-105 and 24-70II lenses a month ago. I am deciding to get either the new lens or the 24-70 f/4IS as I don't need 2.8. I think I might just go with the smaller 24-70 as I will shoot this on the 5DSR and can crop to 105 from 70 easily. 24-105 is as big as the 24-70 2.8 II. Waiting for user results on the new lens when it comes out....no rush for me....

Heck, cropping the 16-35 from 35 to 400 works so 70-105 should be easy

I am an action shooter for much of what I do so my lens collection is built around fast glass for the most part. The only slow glass I have is the 16-35 f4 and the 400 F4 DO. So the answer is no, I won't be buying one.

Opps: I have the 70-300 f4-5.6L too.

I'll likely get the 24-105 II. Would like to read reviews and user impressions before purchasing.

I am seriously considering selling my 24-70 f4 and 70-200 f4 non-IS in favor of this lens. It would provide a lighter kit for hiking and generally easier to deal with while allowing me to retain 16-105 with 2 lenses. Can't determine if I could live a little while without the 105-200 until I saved up for either another or a 100-400.

Up until now I have stuck with the 24-70 f4 because I thought it was a little superior in terms of resolving power compared to the 24-105 original (mostly shoot landscapes). I guess I will have to see results before I finalize my decision...but yes I am seriously considering getting one once its price drops about $100 (maybe Canonpricewatch, refurbished or used).
