For right now I will stay with my existing Nikon flashes but I do have one of the SB5000 units coming in from Borrowlenses dot com for a 2 week trial.

There are countless debates about OEM vs third party grips. Like you, I think they are too expensive but remember you have no recourse if you have problems with the off brand. The warranty on your camera is void as soon as you attach the grip.

Your warranty is also void if you use non-nikon flash, battery, lenses, and, apparently, camera straps. That is yet another reason for never buying another nikon product.

Any of these "ifs" reported? If it did happen, I am sure the net would be running wild with stories.

Two words: Falling Damage

Nikon is notorious for denying warranty claims for all sorts of legal but questionable reasons.

Beta wasn't better. It was worse at what people actually cared about (recording time, cost). It was extended recording modes that allowed VHS to win. Almost nobody ever recorded anything on VHS at anything other than the longest recording mode.

Sony misunderstood the consumer market and came up with a enthusiast product (Beta) for a market that didn't really care about quality. Phillips won the market not via a marketing campaign, but rather through extended recording times.

Congrats! Have had mine since day after release, about 26k on the shutter. Loving this camera. Didn't get the grip at first. But when you need that vertical shutter button, you just need it. I opted for Nikon grip, as the cheap ones scare me with jacking up the voltage on the camera body.

And they jack it up by how much? Meanwhile my Meike grip performs flawlessly

Been reported many times here and on other forums as well. I have heard of Nikon grips failing but never causing damage to the camera. Can't say the same for third party grips.

Then stop buying Nikon and there won't be a problem, will there?

Only the porn industry allowed VHS to succeed, with them BETA would have been the top.

I have read where Nikon has voided warranty repairs for using non OEM items, batteries, grips and such.

As I said in another response VHS took off because the porn industry used there format for sales.

There is a school of thought that says porn brought us high speed internet. People paying $20 a month for porn were not going to tolerate dialup slowness.

Guys, Guys, Guys!! I didn't come to FM to start a fight in the Forums!! There are plenty of other places on the 'net where people can snipe at one another. This is a Nikon forum so to my mind we should all be fans of the Nikon products. That doesn't mean that no one should dare raise a voice with an opposing viewpoint but please let us be respectful to one another.

As for the Betamax thing, I resisted the urge to get the very first one because the recording time was only one hour and I wanted to be able to tape TV movies etc. (this was in 1978 mind you). when Sony announced the 2 hour version I lept at it and never regretted a thing, as to my eyes, the 4 hour VHS looked like crap. I can remember a guy I used to deal with at a local Westchester Stereo store loaning me a couple of adult movies, as a newlywed we didn't need inspiration but it sure was fun to watch in your own living room without the bother of a projector and screen to setup Good times!!

I googled "Nikon refuses warranty service for non oem accessories" and got page after page of stories about Nikon refusing parts to independent repair shops.

Link? Warranty cannot be voided for using any third party accessory, unless it can be shown that that accessory was the source of the damage.

If that was true, any camera that has had a non Nikon lens on it, wouldn't qualify for warranty coverage. Where does this stuff come from?

I haven't seen any reports of camera damage from any grip. I've experienced grips that don't work or don't fit correctly, but never experienced any damage from one.

I did. I am selling off all nikon branded accessories. Soon I will be down to a D700, D800 and D500. Lenses will be Sigtamtok. Third party flashes have replaced nikon. I haven\'t had a Nikon grip since the D80. I use SterlingTek batteries too.

I looked at the nikon gps thing. Of course, it is 4 to 5 times the cost of third party equipment.

Guys take it down a notch please.
Everyone has a right to buy what they want, and also their own opinion.
But more importantly, treat everyone with the respect that a fellow Nikon user deserves.
Canon user, another story

The SB-5000 is great (if not perfect), and nicely complements D500 features. In particular, you will want to make use of the remote radio control, but need the WR-T10 and WR-A10 accessories.
