Hi to all, I just got myself a D500 to replace an aging D2X. All I can say is WOW! The feature set will take me some time to fully understand and make use of. I'm blown away by how nice the higher ISO shots look compared to my "old faithful" from years past. I mostly do wildlife, and in particular birds, so the APS-C sensor size with its 1.5 focal length boost works great for me. I am very anxious to couple it to another old standby a NIKON 600MM F/4.0-D AF-S ED-IF II that's about 14 years old but still runs very nicely for it's age (like me).

One thing though IMHO Nikon has some nerve charging almost $400.00 for the darned vertical grip! On the advice of several folks I trust, I opted to try the one put out by Vertax. It fits perfectly and the buttons, etc. all work fine. Best part is it cost about 1/5 of the Nikon branded unit! Once I get more comfortable with the new camera I hope to post some praise worthy shots

Congratulations from a nother D500 owner, a great camera indeed.
But having a crop is nothing new for you, right , as the D2x is also a camera with a CCD crop sensor.

Congrats. Very nice camera.
I bought the Nikon MB-D17 grip, $400, the next week the generic grips hit the market. Damn the luck.

Congrats! Have had mine since day after release, about 26k on the shutter. Loving this camera. Didn't get the grip at first. But when you need that vertical shutter button, you just need it. I opted for Nikon grip, as the cheap ones scare me with jacking up the voltage on the camera body.

D500 is destined to be a classic. I firmly resisted the OEM grip until Amazon ran a flash sale.

Hi Rick and thanks, I wasn't able to find any other info on the Meike prior to purchasing the Vertax so i kinda rolled the dice on it but considering it was only 70.00 I may just well wind up trying the Meike sometime!

Hey Charles don't feel too badly, I'm the guy that bought 8 Track and Beta Video and darn near bought into the DAT tape thing in the 80's

Doggone, Kevin, I thought I was the only one who did that.

Sending back to LensRentals today the D500 and the 300/4EPF (or whatever its called). Went to Philly airport. Camera is phenomenal; lens is a piece of Chinese plastic, but its optics are pretty damn good. I reckon there's a D500 in my future

I got the Meike grip a couple days after it became available. Like all my other generic grips, it works perfectly. At 20% of the Nikon price it was an easy choice.

There are countless debates about OEM vs third party grips. Like you, I think they are too expensive but remember you have no recourse if you have problems with the off brand. The warranty on your camera is void as soon as you attach the grip.

Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act of 1975 prohibits vendor disclaimers of this kind. Third-party car parts for repair and customization was the original motivation for the law, but applies to all consumer products. In particular, warrantor must demonstrate causality to decline repair obligations.

And if it fries the electronics, do you think Nikon will warranty it?

Perhaps you meant to say "The warranty on your camera is voidable as soon as you attach the third-party grip and it fries the camera electronics". You could take that to court, I guess.

Truth be told, I never gave a thought about what DGC1 posted happening to my new camera but I guess the same could be said about 3rd party flashes, radio triggers, and even lenses.

DGC1 please understand that I am not making light of the point you raised, it is just something that has not ever crossed my mind. I also would expect that if it blew up even one camera body that it would have been widely reported. Anyhow thanks to all you guys for making me feel welcome here!! I've popped in here from time to time over many years but figured it was time I joined up.

BTW I usually make it to Photo Plus Expo in NYC but I cannot this year It is doubly troubling because I will not be able to attend the memorial service for Michael Reichman that will be happening. I've been a LULA member since 2000 and have had the pleasure of meeting Michael in person and speaking him with him several times.

Don't forget-beta was better, (only a marketing campaign allowed vhs to win), beta continued for a very long time as the professional format.

Congrats Kevin. Got mine about a month ago. What are you gonna do about flash? Don't think I'm gonna dive into the whole expensive Nikon thing. Looking hard at the Flashpoint Zoom Li-on system,... you have any thoughts on that?

I absolutely remember that Beta was better!! To this day I have a beta machine running my basement man cave with the tapes I made in the 70' still running well! There is also a beautifully restored Marantz receiver there along with a restored TEAC reel to reel machine. All this runs into a set of Gen 5 Bose 901's!!
