Hi Ralph, only you can really know if you need that fast frame rate. I use that lens/extender combo with my 5D3, and it works great. I also use it with my 1DIV, and that works great, too. I can only speculate that with the 5D4 it would be even better.

Perhaps you can go with the 5D4 now, and get a used 1DX or even a 1D4 in the future, for those chosen times when you really need those fast fps.

I can't speak specifically to the 5DIV, but I use the combination of the v.2 lens and the most recent 1.4x TC on my 5DsR for wildlife photography and it works well.

The 1DX does a lot better than the 5 series with this combo (excluding 5D4) and 1D4 did better than 5D3 too. The 1 series are appreciably snappier in focus. The 5D4 maybe closer to the 1DX. Having said that the 5DsR which I find faster than 5D3 for AF, does a pretty good job with this combo.

Arash who has been testing superteles with TC's still thinks 1DX is faster than 5D4 IIRC, but need to see more testing.

Hi Whayne, Yes I believe that too (1Dx/2 snappier than 5D3/4/DsR), based on the limited time I had both bodies in my bag at the same time.

However, my quarter just dropped about the fact that the 5DsR has a substantial resolution gain compared to even the 5D4 and that we should actually compare 5D4 + 1.4xiii + 100-400ii vs 5DsR + bare 100-400ii.
A quick calculation for reach: 5DsR vs 5D4 = 1.3x reach advantage, that almost evens out the 1.4x Ext.

In other words, knowing the 5D4 does well with the 1.4xiii/100-400ii combo would not make it more appealing than the 5DsR with the bare lens. hence this entire topic was not really necessary and I may have wasted some of your time

My 5DIV focuses faster than my 5DSR. I also don't have to use only the center point.
For action the 5DIV has an advantage, for landscape the 5DSR wins.

Well the point is that with the 5DsR you can leave the 1.4x at home and use all 61 points. And crop out the edges and have the same field of view. Almost.
I do believe the 5D4 will be snappier with the bare lens, but my guess is the 5DsR + bare 100-400ii wins against the 5D4 + 100-400ii w/ 1.4xiii.
But I've never used the 5D4. You have both, you may be able to tell us

I think there are reasons to prefer either lens, depending on one's specific needs. However, it is important to note that you'll be using the center AF points for the 5DsR with the 1.4x TC. It works well, but in some situations the 5DIV will likely AF "better."

I'm a 5DsR user.

I don't pixel peep much, I just try to bring the equipment best suited for the situation.
Both cameras are great IMO, and they pair very well, especially since the controls are almost identical.
I have compared my 1DIV & 5DSR at 1000mm (tripod mounted) and the cropping ability of the latter gives it an IQ advantage.
I shoot mostly wildlife and my normal setup is a 500II/1.4X on the 5DIV and the 100-400II on the 5DSR.
On occasion I'll mount the 2XIII on the 500 and am pleased with the results.
I am fortunate to be able to have such a kit, and only occasionally do I wish for more reach. (Don't we all.)

Hi Dan,
I'm afraid you're slightly missing the point here We're not comparing different lenses, but the same 100-400ii. In this section of the discussion we're comparing 5D4 vs 5DsR, but with the 1.4xiii only 5D4, the bare lens on the 5DsR.

So both setups have all 61 AF points available and both setups give approximately the same FoV.
