p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sony APS-C Lens Wishlist

With the release of the A6500 hot on the heels of the 6300 (and with the A6000 still a very, very capable camera for both stills and video), I've been thinking about what Sony could offer to the APS-C lens team to better round out the lineup.

I'd love to see a 14mm f/2.5 or f/2.8 or so... Something very similar to the Fuji 14, which I had when I was using my XT1 and it was my favorite lens and the one that I miss the most from that system. An AF 14mm lens from Sony would be awesome.

I'd also love to see a 90mm f/2 (for a 135mm equivalent). Again, similar to the Fuji. I know Sony already has a 90/2.8 Macro and that it's a phenomenal lens capable of beautiful IQ (I had one with my A7II before going back to APS-C land), but I'd like one much smaller and without Macro capability as a portrait lens. Maybe badged Zeiss to match the 24/1.8 (which is my favorite APS-C Sony lens hands-down)?

I think if I could have both of those to add to my 24/1.8 and 55/1.8 I'd have a really nice kit in a 21/35/85/135 format which would be awesome.

Any hope from you guys for what's to come from Sony in terms of APS-C lenses?

An A6700?

I do not see them making any new lens for APS-C.

A 14/2.8, 16/2 and an 18/2, all high quality lenses and a high quality standard zoom. That should pretty much fix Sony's APS-C system and make it more competitive against Fujifilm and m43.

The Fuji 90/2 won't gain you any real advantage over the Zeiss Batis 85/1.8 except a slimmer lens hood. I don't see a need for APS-C lenses longer than approx. 50mm focal length.

You're probably right. I guess the existing Sony 90/2.8 Macro would suffice as it's not overly large. But yes, I agree on all other counts. Definitely the 16 (which I didn't think about before) as 24mm is pretty popular in 35mm land.

Sony should make a roadmap for how they will fix their APS-C system lens selection.

I'd be all over either of those but with the 18-105/4 I'm not so sure there'd be room for a 15-85. The 16-50/2.8 would be awesome!

I would like to see a rebadge of the A mount Zeiss 16/80 f3.5-4.5 or the 16/50 f2.8. Both of these lenses were 1st class kit lenses for Sony's cropped bodies.

Nah...make more compact lenses like the 28f2 and 35f2.8 and I'll be happy. I want my lenses to work on both my A6000 and A7R.

Generally speaking, lenses which are designed for smaller formats have higher resolving power. This is because 1) they need to out of necessity and 2) there is less glass in the lens so they can offset the cost of the higher-quality glass by having less of it.

Is this for e mount? Or a mount, too?

For e mount, I would like:
16-50/2.8 is awfully large... 72mm filter thread on a mount.
I would settle for an 18-50/2.8 if it could drop down to a 67mm filer. 62 would be amazing, but highly unlikely.
The 55-300 brought e mount. Wow, unreal sharpness in the centers. Great lens.

For a mount and e mount
A nice smallish 55/1.2, 66/1.4, and 90/2 for portraits.
50-140/2.8
10-20/2.8
14/2 or 2.8
35/1.4
A small 24/1.8 or f/2.

But I also shoot an A7R along with a A6000...don't want dedicated lenses for the crop that won't work on the full frame. I was the same with my Canon setup, 5d2 and 7d...no dedicated crop lenses.

I'd like to see a more affordable wide angle option that the 10-18mm. In terms of an APS-C specific lineup:

Zooms:
15-85 f/4
70-300 f/4-5.6 (small)

APS-C Primes (all as compact as possible):
10mm f/4
24mm f/2

To me, that would make Sony's APS-C system pretty appealing (along with what already exists).

Understood, but for those who'd like to use APS-C as their primary camera they're much better served by APS-C specific lenses rather than the IQ compromises of using a FF lens on their body, at least for anything short of the $2k+ GM lenses available.

That post made me realise that Sony has a commercial problem with apsc rhat they share with Canikon but not Fuji. All Fuji users are committed to APSC, they don't worry about what to do with their lenses if they go full frame. While many Sony APSC users are the same, there are also plenty who think one day they will go full frame, and want their lenses to come with them. While that may not be rational, it reduces the market for APSC lenses relative to the user base...

A native 18-35mm F1.8 and 50-100mm F1.8. Great for photo and video and all-around all-in-one package (minus the weight)

though for travelling I'd leave the a7rii home and take those two plus an APS-C camera.

My kingdom for a decent midrange zoom, ie one without mushy edges/corners at infinity.

Pretty much. Fuji is the only aps-c maker that works towards full frame equivalent lenses. Even m43 try to make FF equivalent focal lengths. Why all the other aps-c makers haven't caught on is beyond me.
