I was wondering if using the 16mm cropped to the 23mm FOV (that 24vs 35 debate...) would be totally ok or if I "need" the 23/2...that's what I found...(I pasted the link not to put it all again here...)

Would like to hear your thoughts an experiences...

These are very different lenses and much different FOV's. Of course you can crop, but I find that messy and loses resolution and affects your IQ. The more appropriate question is are you a 35mm or 50mm shooter FF effective FL. Having the 16/1.4, the next length the 35/1.4 maybe a better choice.

I really like the 16/1.4 as it not too wide street photography or function shoots. Sometimes I prefer wider like a 21mm eff, but the IQ of the 16/1.4 is superb

I have the 23/1.4, and I needed the 16/1.4. Huge difference in the FOV between the two focal lengths. Love them both, for different scenarios. Sometimes for the same scenarios, too.

Actually the difference is not that huge, and it's concentrated in the outers of the lens. Once you crop it, the FOV difference no longer shows. At the cost of total resolution, but not detail resolution, as the focal length is close. Just give it a try...

I am lost. Why would anyone crop it to get an identical FOV?

Without cropping, the 16mm has a AOV of 83.2 degrees. The 23mm has 63.4 degrees. Those are quite different. And sure, you could crop to get a similar look, but its a pretty big loss of space when printing.

My guess is because cropping is a lot cheaper than a second lens. A lot less space and weight in your camera bag, too.

I guess if we just kept on cropping we could also make a case for not needing the 35/1.4 or f2 WR either.

Heck, if your cool with about a 2mp image could even post the 56/1.2 on the B&S too
