For years I've been selecting the AF point whilst looking through a viewfinder, most of the time using a joystick. Since the directional controller on the A7RII is terrible for this purpose (when trying to move the AF point quickly I always end up rotating the wheel which changes the ISO setting!) so I've had to go back to setting the AF point before moving the camera to your eye (if you're shooting an

I think the right thumb—for both left and right-eyed shooters—would make more sense. I tried both orientations on the GX85 and although left eye is slight more of a challenge, it can be done in a manner that is transparent. I think what the camera makers need to implement is a slightly-angled EVF (if not swivel) to enable more effective use of the pad.

I think I prefer this over the joystick—it would yield faster and more accurate execution.

Surprised how many of us left eyed shooters there are. I wonder if there's a correlation between this trait and mild dyslexia, it took me 45 years to figure I was gifted with Irlen dyslexia. I've always detested fluorescent lighting (looking at you Al Gore), now I know why.

If Sony pushed the release date of the a6500 to address Fuji (very possible I think) then I predict Sony will put out a 100-400 zoom FQ 2017. Thoughts?

Design, production and marketing all that takes time, companies have to plan ahead. I seriously doubt that Sony drastically changes its schedule based on what Fuji or other competitors do.

That being said, with the GM available (at least on paper), the only big zoom missing from the e-mount line-up is a 70-400G. It would be a logical step to introduce that after the 70-300G and the 70-200GM. How much of a priority long lenses are for Sony remains to be seen, though. I would think a fast 135mm prime and 16-35 2.8 GM have higher priority (not necessarily because I want either, but because there should be greater demand for those lenses).

From my understanding, production of the A6300 will continue, so really, Sony just added another tier in the APSC line. So possibly, the A6500 wasn't in response to the XT2, but rather part of their roadmap.

I'm surprised there are not cameras out there in the hands of the usual testers for review yet. I have preordered and anxiously waiting for some serious reviews.

For me, the 70-300 doesn't leave much to be desired. I'm more of the mind that I'd like something with real reach. Like a 200-500 5.6. I can dream.

BH says it will ship on 29th November, and I hope it does! I'm leaving Dec 1st for a dogsledding, landscape and aurora workshop in Yukon and would love to have it with me

I have nothing to contribute except that I shoot left eye.

How many left eye shooters here are cross eye dominant?

I really want to buy this camera...but what I really NEED is an A7 with the technology from the A6500...enabling a full-frame fast shooter with the crop-mode essentially making it an A6500 in reach-limited situations. I could see owning that in addition to my A7R2 easily.

All that being said...still want an A6500.

was i expecting too much hopping they would double the shutter speed? WHY IS IT STILL 1/4000th

it's too extra to get ND filters just to use with this camera...man I really was missing the a6 compactness.....

I was planning to sell my a7rII and ride with the a6500 until the a7rIII drops....The focus speed, the coverage of the phase points, the 5 axis, the improved grip...sony almost had me........so many overexposed photos trying to shoot wide open in the cali sun and the a6300 just couldn't keep up

Just received A6500 from B&H Photo, here is the initial impression not a critical testing.

- Autofocus seems faster, need more testing in daylight for tracking
- Grip is awesome, feels just like A7RM2
-Initial recording in 4K in standard mode (no high heat limit activated) lasted full 29 minute 58 seconds, camera felt warm but not hot, testing was done inside with regular room temperature.
- IBIS is as good as A7RM2, able to handhold shot with 85MM F1.4 GM lens at 1/6th second, sharp picture.
- Like the new Menu system, way easier to follow and find functions, compare to A6300 and A7 series camera.

Will follow up with more testing this weekend.

Great hopefully with these coming out and the A99II we will see a update for the menu system for us A7 series shooters. I have the A6500 rented for a gig next month.

I suspect the lack of a higher shutter speed could mean that there will be yet another model above the A6500—the A7000 series?

It seems clear that flagships in the cropped sensor arena have soared to the $2000 price-points—the A6500 is well below this threshold.

Got mine too. I concur on your points. A few additional observations (obviously not scientific):

IBiS seems a bit better than my a7r2 for video.
I like the thumb af for fast af selecting... is it blazing fast? No but it's about as fast a dedicated joystick would be when I used to shoot canon and Nikon
Battery life seems as short or shorter than my a7r2
Maybe it's user error but the video is cropping in... I don't like that.

I hope they update the firmware on the current a72 series to make the menus match... easier for muscle memory development
