p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Forgive my ignorance, xqd backup question

Nikon is loaning me a D500 to check out for a few weeks.
I will use it on a few assignments.
I'll have to purchase an XQD card, since I never shoot without a backup card.

Question.
If for some crazy reason, my sd card fails, may I plug a cable into the body and download the images to my computer from the xqd card?
Or would I need a reader?

Thx,
Cheers

absolutely. but an external USB 3 reader will be faster and not drain your battery.
the D500 is a USB 3 device itself.

well I needed to use the cable tonight!
I sent NPS an email tonight.

Dear Nikon NPS,
I think it would be a great idea for you guys to update all firmware on your bodies before loaning them out..
Luckily I shot with dual cards today, obviously something that all professionals do.
but I never anticipated that the body would have old firmware which would lock up the camera to the point that I needed to remove the SD card in order to continue the assignment.

thank you for listening to my suggestion,
Ryan

Nikon has released a firmware update for the D500, correcting the card error issue we discussed in our D500 review. The error which happened once in our office and has been reported by many camera owners manifests when some UHS-II SD cards are used (Lexar cards seem to be particularly affected). According to Nikon, these card errors are resulting from the cards themselves, not the camera.

The update takes the D500s firmware from version 1.01 to 1.02, and only corrects the card error.

I, personally, have about 15 USB 3 cables lying around for things such as readers, external drives and various other devices. I am surprised that you don't have one or two yourself.

the basic cardinal rule of usage is, as a user, you must be prepared. you need to prepare by reading the manual testing and inspecting the gear before putting it into service especially in a critical environment.

actually I don't use the SD card for more then overflow and on my D7200.
in addition they are up to firmware 1.10
