p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What a difference 12 minutes makes

I took these three images within a twelve minute period while the sun was setting at Lost Dutchman State Park near Apache Junction, Arizona. Superstition Mountain is fascinating to observe while the sun is setting. The color of the mountain changes dramatically within a few minutes from dark to deep orange to dark red. Then it's gone. Any lack of sharpness in the foliage was due to a slight breeze and slow shutter. Canon 6D, Zeiss 50/1.4 Planar ZE.

It's nice to see the progression of light in these. I would say #3 is my favorite of these.

As to the softness from moving vegetation, don't forget you can raise your ISO.

Beautiful images, it's really interesting to see the colors changing like that.

Thank you all for the comments. And Jim - you are so right on the ISO. I could have easily bumped it up to 400 without losing any quality. Thanks.

You could have easily kicked it up even higher then that. I have no qualms about shooting at ISO 800 if the situation dictates it on my D810. And I will even go higher then that if needed. I would rather shoot say ISO 1600 even if it's a little noisy, be a bit aggressive with the noise reduction, and then use a lower ISO image for the base shot and then just mask in what is typically just a few small areas with the moving branches and leaves. I like to think of the great quality high ISO abilities as just another tool, and not something to be avoided as we would have done 10 years ago.

Great advice. Sometimes in the field you just forget the basics when the light is right.

Very dramatic and well done. I find the definition and clarity of the individual spires to help make this photo.

You have captured fantastic light. The last one has great color contrast. But I would darken the lower half of the image and add just a little more contrast. Great shot.

Perfect examples as to why every dedicated landscape photography book speaks about the golden hours.

And I can already imagine what a mid-day shot would look like here.
