p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Got Suggestions or Stay with Fuji 60mm Macro Lens?

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a macro lens for Fuji and read that the Fuji macro lens is very slow to focus. Does anyone know of any alternatives?

Thanks,
Voltaire

Zeiss Touit 50mm F2.8, it's a great lens ... if you don't mind waiting for it to arrive you can buy it from the UK on Ebay for around 650 , New in the US it's 1k

I got my 60mm f/2.4 macro back when my old XE1 was new. It was slow on that camera, for sure. Effective, but no speed demon when it came to AF.

It focuses significantly faster on newer cameras, such as my XPro2. I now am comfortable using it for things like street photography. It isn't as fast as other Fujifilm lenses (such as my f/1.4 23mm and 35mm lenses, my 14mm f/2.8, or my 50-140mm zoom) but it is quite decent.

Optically, the 60mm macro is an excellent performer.

I purchased a used 60mm for my X-T2. I'm convinced that it must perform better on the newer cameras because I have no issues with it. The focusing is reasonably fast unless the new focus distance is very far from the previous focus distance. Optic performance is impressive to me.

It is a macro lens. It is almost a rule that they should focus slower. In my very limited use of a macro, I found manual focus to be a much better way to go. Myself, I would buy a Tokina 90/2.5 (the Bokina) and savor the manual focus fun coupled with tremendous IQ and luscious bokeh.

if you're focusing from macro to infinity, as it's a macro lens obviously it will be really slow.
however if you're using it a tele lens, i found it to be a decent performer even inside a building.
i was comparing it agains the 90mm on a X-Pro2 and it was just a touch slower than the 90mm but I can see myself using one as my only tele lens.

My experience is that the 60mm macro's AF speed is usable in distances from about 1 meter to infinity. At shorter distances AF is slower, which is logical because it is a macro lens.

Also make sure the 60mm macro is on the latest firmware version. When I upgraded the firmware of my 60mm, AF was quite a lot better.

Seems to be only for the Sony version, not the Fuji mount version.

Hated the Fuji 60. Love the Zeiss 50.

There's a $600 copy on Amazon used right now.

I use the 60mm macro for closeup photography. I began to use it in AF recently on my XPro2. I move the focus point around to where I want it and when I press the shutter the image is made almost immediately. Maybe it takes another second to focus on older bodies, but I see no problem.

I haven't had one for long, my initial impressions: very sharp with overall nice image quality, great for a smallish light general purpose close focus capable lens.
I wouldn't want it as my one and only 'macro dedicated' lens, though. A manual adapted macro would be better, I think, if you are talking full-on macro with tripod, rails, etc. Manual focus is better for this regardless of the brand and the manual focus on this lens is not as defined as a Nikkor 55 or Contax 60, for example. The AF, for me, hunts and misses trying to find minimum focus distance.

That's pretty typical of all macro lenses , if it misses it has to go through the whole range to find focus. Guess it comes with territory , I agree manual focus is best, but autofocus can work well also. I think the Zeiss is the best you can do until that 80mm is released , when that happens I will have to think hard about keeping the 90mm.

Ever think of using the 90mm with extension tubes ? How close do you need to get ?

90 with 11mm extension

If my calculation is right, it would require 2 stacked 16mm tubes to get 1:1 magnification for the 60mm macro. I am thinking of getting an extra MCEX-16

(the combined MCEX-11 and MCEX-16 would give a 0.95:1 magnification)
