Not really any extra reach with the D500. D850 has essentially the same pixel pitch as D500.

D850 in DX crop is 19.4mp, vs the D500 20mp

Ture, I didn't think of that. Then no D500

The price if used d500s have been dipping into the 1300 range around here. The camera is not without benefits, including AF in the dark and the ridiculous AF coverage, pro build, deep buffer, and deeper DOF at a given FOV.

Anyway, was just curious if any were still using the D500 long term for our work. I am shooting dual D800s, and my backup bodies right now are a D7100 and Df. I could see the perks of a dual D500 kit with a D800 for when you really need the pixels and DR.

Update: bought a D500.

Initial impressions: The display is fantastic Speed and AF are stupid good, even in sketchy light. Viewfinder is magnificent. Backlit buttons are the bee's knees. Next wedding is the first week of December, so I'll report back after I use it in the real world.

Just playing around, the Sigma 24-35 f/2 is a shockingly useful general purpose lens on DX.

So I get the 70-200 on the d500. But assuming you're using just DX, what lenses would you use for wedding work?

Negative, I normally shoot two D800s and primes (180, 85, 60, 50, 35, and the 24-35). For weddings, I will probably use D800s as primary. D500's superior AF will have it tagging in as needed. Dark LED lit party bus, cave like venues, etc. I could definitely see the appeal of shooting two D500s already. I'd need to add a lens to the wide end if I were to do that.

I'd love to spend some time with a D500

The autofocus of the D500 is 10 years more advanced than that of the D3 and much better for low light action shooting, as with the reception, than any cameras other than the D5 and D850.
I like using a DX camera with the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens to turn it effectively into a 105-300mm f/2.8 zoom.

The perfect companion camera is the D850. With group photos or outdoor events where I often need to crop out distracting background elements, the 12MP D3 fell short. The D3/D3s in DX becomes a 5MP camera which leaves a lot to be desired. The D850 in DX mode becomes a 19MP camera by way of comparison.

The D850 and D500 combo also means needing only one set of SD cards for a wedding and only having EN-EL15 batteries during the day.
