p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Am I crazy? Just bought a D500 for weddings.

I just pulled the trigger on a decent deal on a new D500 as I mainly shoot weddings as a second shooter and sometimes a primary. I use a D3s 99.9% of the time and it's my workhorse. I am having some issues with it lately and have a D750 as a second body but I honestly shoot the D3s so much I only used the D750 once to try and never really used it after that. I read all the hype on the D500 so figured I would try it and see and possibly sell the D750. Am I crazy or is the D500 that good?

My second shooter uses a D500 along side a D800. I am liking the D500 files just as well or maybe better.

I would sell the D3s, the D750 has better files and better AF. Then keep the D750/D500 combo that way you have a full frame for wide stuff and the cropped sensor for telly stuff.

If you hardly used the D750, yes it does seem crazy especially so as it is the better camera. Now along with the body size you have a tiny VF too.

Some people get attached to cameras since they are familiar, perhaps this could be the reason.

Get rid of the d3s. I sold mine. It just cannot hang with the d750 and d500. Both gives you much better starting files to work with. One thing about the D3 Line is that it never got reds and white balance right. The 750 took care of that and d500 expands on it.

I am in the same boat as you. But I'm going to wait for Nikon to release their next model as I've been spoiled by the d500 pro button placement.
Oh. I've also never owned a Nikon that didn't have a circular viewfinder. I am used to it.

An FYI:

20mm f1.8 = 30mm on D500

24mm f1.8 = 36mm on D500

58mm f1.4 = 87mm on D500

I love the d3s but will really start using the d750 more and decide which to keep.

When you compare files it's no contest. Double the resolution. Better color and iso.

I worked for about two years with a company who use Nikon Bodies. I heard that the D750 has mixed reviews and the D500 is having quite positive reviews. Try to rent it before you make your decision.

I have a d810 d750 and d500
I really like that the d500 is more of a pro layout, like the d810
the d750 is a big fail in that regard.
I may sell the d750 when I can get a third body that is more similar to the d810/500.

d500
I like the round viewfinder (like the d810 has), the new ISO button up on the top.
like the folding screen, it's useful at a reception.
I like that the screen is touch screen. you can playback images and just swipe the screen left and right like a tablet - and it's lightning fast!
you can pinch the screen and zoom in to review, once you pinch, you can scroll from there and see the zoomed in position on the next image(s). REALLY awesome tech.

you can use the touch screen in two ways for shooting:
touch screen AF and then use shutter button
touch screen AF and when you let go, it releases the shutter

11 fps and awesome buffer action
I wish it was closer to 25mp
AF tech is nice
not as good in low light as the d750 obviously
still makes nice bokeh, and has nice IQ.
new w/b tech
wifi on board
gps on board
buttons can all light up, like the D5
lots of new tech in the camera

Y'all are crazy.

D3s bodies FTW, I'm still deceiving my clients
I shoot dual D3s and will probably not get rid of them unless I really like the D5

Shooting weddings with a crop body? Are you guys crazy?

I love my D3s and can't see selling that's my main body. I bought a D750 when it first came out and like it but can't get used to the layout and it's been sitting in my bag - only used it twice. I hate the idea of going DX since most of my lenses are FX but still have a few DX too. The more I shoot with the D500 the more I love the feel and the layout. The joystick and touchscreen are awesome along with the autofocus. I do need high ISO capability as I mainly shoot weddings and hate to lose the D750 as my backup but will probably sell it and use the D500.

Tried d750 and d500 combo for a wedding last week. I love the D500 layout as well. Shooting in manual, I can spin the dials looking through the viewfinder to my hearts content -- having the dedicated ISO button is a joy.

Although I set the d750 movie record button for iso, pressing it sometimes activates ISO/sometimes doesn't (anyone know why? Seems like the camera/button falls asleep). In a "what the heck" (being polite here for the forum) moment, I found myself taking my eye away from the viewfinder, looking down/tapping the shutter button, then pressing movie record/iso to change ISO, then bringing my eye up to the viewfinder. My only real niggle with the D750. If anyone has any suggestions re the iso button....

Thanks.

I have the same problem with my D750 record button mapped for iso. I've now done a few weddings with the D750/D500 combo. D750 for the portraits/formals, and love the D500 for the action. I use 16-80 and 70-200 with the D500, rotating the lenses with a belt mounted Peak Design "capture lens" as needed.

You guys are all making me want to add a D500 into my D750 system. For me personally I don't mind the location of the ISO button on the back of the D750. I find that easy and fast to access and change.
