Shipping - Do I have a right to a signature??

Hello,

I am a student and I have been doing field work this summer as far away as
some two thousand eight hundred miles away from home.
Fortunately, this interesting experience comes to an end in approximately two
weeks from today.

On August 5th, I ordered a small package containing an adapter for old C/Y
lenses and a couple of used hoods and step-up rings from a retail store.

At check out, I was given the choice to opt for different shipping options. I
chose two-day shipping with UPS.

My order was to be sent to California to my uncle's address. My uncle is often
away from home due to work, but he has the confidence that when he is away
packages will arrive safely in his building.

To my unluck, the UPS driver left the two small packages, (one order, but divided
by the seller into two small packages of 0.8 lbs.), at the front door and required
from none any signature.

In the past two weeks, I have had the chance to talk to my uncle, I have come to
realize that he doesn't have the package. I have called UPS and they said that
they could make an investigation if the seller asks them to do so. I spoke to the
retailer yesterday and the agent I spoke to doesn't want to do it.

I also asked UPS who had signed the package and they said none and that the
package was not required to be signed.

I honestly found that statement very funny and I was laughing inside myself.
I mean, what is the bother or the point of the retailer to offer up to nine or ten
different shipping options with different couriers if every option will be as good,
or less good than sending it by regular post.

I mean, I think one of the points or advantages of using those courier express
services, at least to many clients, may not always have to do entirely with the
speed of delivery and/or the safety in handling, but in my view, and in many
persons' view, but with the certitude of delivery to a person at the other end.

It is one of the most important factors, in my view again, tha the ordered
merchandse be delivered to somebody; a person who at the other end receives
and signs the delivery.

Anyways, I will call the dealer again sometime later. I appreciate
all your thoughts and comments.

Thank you very much in advance, kind regards,

igmoliav : ) !!!

P.S. I wonder if Pay Pal would be willing help me a bit in any way.

Signatures on delivery are optional with UPS. It's up to the shipper to specify whether a signature is required, if not, the package can be delivered without one. Some shippers routinely require signatures, but, in my experience, signatures are more often not required as standard operating procedure. If you want signature delivery, you need to query the shipper at the time of the order as to their policy on requiring signatures. For example, B&H almost always requires signatures..

Even when the shipper sends a package sig-required ultimately the local UPS office and individual driver have leeway in many instances and can leave a package without a signature of the address or neighborhood is deemed "safe."

Complain to the reseller and if they don't respond, dispute it through the credit card bank. The reseller should eat the cost if they did not ask for a signature.

I disagree. If the OP as the buyer did not request signature delivery or ask if signature delivery was mandatory/offered, and the seller does not ordinarily use signature delivery, how is the seller at fault?

I've had good luck with CC companies setting issues straight, including failure to deliver.
As a rule I rarely deal with flaky companies. Life is too short to waste time on such nonsense.

Successful delivery is the seller's responsibility. If the package is lost or damaged, the seller (shipper) is the only party that can make a claim against the shipping company. Obtaining a signature at final delivery protects the seller. The buyer is protected by the payment process, assuming the buyer is smart enough to not send cash or use PayPal gift.

Hi,

Thank you for your messages : ) !!!

I would just like to share a few thoughts.

I would only would like to know where the package is.

I think almost everybody would be satisfied to get a signature
for the successful delivery of the merchandise one buys.

The package is important to me because besides a Contax
lens adapter for Sony cameras, it has some metal hoods.
That together with some step-up rings, is what I need to use
some lenses that wait for me to further do with my photography.
That is why I am very interested in the package to appear.

What can I do? How do you suggest to solve this situation with
the retailer, and with UPS?

Thank you again, kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

My experience is that most sellers only require a signature if the value of the item is over a specific threshold. For instance, Samy's camera in California, who I frequently purchase from, requires a signature if a lens is over $600.00 in value. So you have to check with the seller when you buy if you want to know up front. Often it will be in their Terms and Conditions or FAQ's.

That said, I'm not sure why you expected a package shipped to a third party, who is often away from home, to be safe until he returns. Did you think the UPS driver would search around the building to find someone. Maybe I'm missing something here.

A signature for the delivery of goods helps to ensure a succesful delivery, and helps to further secure and care for the whole logistical process, started when the shipment from the warehouse was made.

I kinda sorta agree with both sides of the coin here, but am pretty anal about ensuing proper delivery when it comes to receiving things, especially since I have to use differing ship-to addresses depending on which carrier is used.

I also gauge the need for a signature depending on the value of the object being delivered and as a savy buyer, if I feel the need for such, will inquire about adding it if it's not stated in the "fine print." Even then, as Henry stated, there's no absolute guaranty a signature will be acquired on delivery, if local delivery offices feel it's safe to leave a package if nobody's home. Still, I figure requesting signature delivery and paying for it when needed at least provides the recipient (and seller) some level of recourse by forcing the shipper to prove they delivered an item where signature delivery was paid for but none was acquired.

Beats the heck out of he said, she saids.
