For general hobby use, mix of vacation, portraits, family events, landscape/cityscapes and street. No sports or BIF. One kit or the other.

I voted for the d750. I'd also buy it all used off these forums.

Either camera is overkill for what you are doing. I voted for D7200 because it gives you more flexibility (two lenses), and the lenses are better ones at that. I would go with the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS and a used Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR1. I'd also add a Nikon SB-700 (or used SB-900) flash and, of course, a tripod for landscapes. No one will ever see any difference between a D750 and D7200 used to take the photos you will use it for. I guarantee that. I'd rather have the two better lenses.

It's the glass that makes the biggest difference. That being said I personally wouldn't recommend putting money into dx glass, especially if you plan to continue on in photography. The value retention alone is way worse on dx than it is on fx. There are other reasons why i personally prefer fx for the majority of what i shoot.

I'd say go with the d750 (consider a used d800), change the 24-120 out with a cheap 24-85d and bank the rest to pick up a third party 70-200 or buy some primes. The 24-85d is plenty good enough for what you've listed plus it gets you down to 2.8 at 24mm. I love my copy of that lens. You could pick up primes with the savings or skip primes for now and get a sigma 70 200 2.8 or a tamron ( i have the sigma and love it as well) these can be had for decently cheap compared to the nikkors. You can get used copies of both of those lenses for well under a grand (which is what the two you listed cost new). I have first hand experience with both lenses and can link my flckr if you wanted.

I voted for the D7200 kit, mostly because of the 70-200mm. I too think that solid lenses will be the biggest thing that'll get you some nice photos. Either camera will be great, but the difference between a mid-level lens (24-120mm) and the top of the line (70-200mm) will be fairly noticeable, disregarding the difference in usability/focal lenghts.

My real suggestion would be to get the D7200, and then get a used 24-70mm and 70-200mm VR1, and then maybe follow that up with a 35 or 50mm 1.8 if budget allows. Assuming you're buying new, the D750 setup above would cost ~$3000, and the D7200 kit would be ~$3500. The 24-70 and 70-200 VR1 can both be found used for ~$1000 each, so those two and the D7200 new would run you $3000, add in a 35 or 50mm 1.8 for stuff where you need a larger aperture and you're in at $3200. Right between the 2 suggested kits, but IMO a much better all around kit overall.

I didn't vote for either. I don't see how we can suggest what setup for you to use when we don't even know you.

Have you used a DSLR before?

How long have you used a camera?

Do you know the difference between full frame and crop sensors?

Now looking at your profile you are listing a D7200 as your camera. So you must already own one? Are you dissatisfied with it? You really need to supply more background info. Otherwise all you are going to get is people voting and suggesting the camera choice they themselves would use.

I hope that makes sense.

Jim

True to a point. However, he did list what he was going to do with the stuff. It's not rocket science. The only thing left out was how many prints bigger than 8x10 has he made in the past five years? If making 20x30 or bigger, then a D800 makes sense. It's big and bulky and a pain in the ass to carry around on family outings though. Otherwise, both D7200 and D750 are 24mp resolution. If it were me looking for something, I'd probably go with a Fuji X2 set up, or maybe even an Olympus M43. Smaller kit, great lenses, and the less capable AF isn't an issue for the subjects he listed. Carrying bulky camera gear on family outings and family vacations is a fun killer.

So, as Jim Fox says, your profile indicates you already own the first D7200 kit you are asking about?

Are you considering an upgrade, downgrade? Just a change of pace? Can you only just own one body? Get the D750 (or maybe even a D610) and try it alongside the D7200 you already own.

There's not a person on this board that can tell you definitively what to do. They don't know your wallet size, bicep size, how critical your eye is, what your long term plan might be for any pictures you acquire. The size difference between bodies is really minor. People worrying about ounces...
A D7200 is 1.49 lb / 675 g camera body only.
A D750 is 1.65 lb / 750 g body only

You have one lens that is DX, and another that will work flawlessly on either body. And fortunately, that 17-50mm isn't overly expensive. So an upgrade to a DX/FX compatible lens is not that painful.

Interestingly you list out several genre's of photography and the two that you say you won't be doing are sports or BIF, where I would want a DX body. So that sways me to a full frame of some sort. Maybe just add a D610 body and try it for a while? Oh wait, that D610 body weighs a ton compared to the D750!
D610 body is 1.67 lb / 760 g camera body only

The 70-200mm f2.8 VR is very heavy. I have one and never use it for family outings. I never take it on trips any more. I only use it at weddings and maybe a very few night shots where I need something longer than 85mm. If I quit doing weddings this is the first thing I will sell. For what you are doing, the excellent Nikon 70-200mm f4 VR would be less $$, less weight, and would be a better fit. On D7200 it is long enough to take some wildlife photos too.

It reads like you are trying to buy everything at once for a specific price. This isn't a great way to go imo since you'll make lens decisions now you wouldn't otherwise eg. a 24-120 and having to hauling that around with you everywhere.

To answer the question, the D750. A 70-200 (and carrying it) is total overkill/pain in the arse for casual use let alone that it means you will be using a lesser camera. Do you really even need anything over 105mm on a crop body for the uses you listed?

If it were me for general hobby use I'd look at mirrorless cameras. At the very least look at more 1.8G primes

For general hobby and family use, DX is more than good enough and the lenses you paired with it make a great generalist kit. We could give better advice if we knew more about you plan to do.

DX will be perfectly fine for what you are looking to do.

That said, the D750 and 70-200 F4 combo would be killer. Add whatever shorter option you would like. Tamron 28-75, 35mm F1.8/501.8, etc.

I switched to FF in 2011 and never looked back. General stuff, the 24-105 and 85 prime would be THE best and the most ideal setup.

First, thanks everyone for the input, the various points of view are always helpful. Here's the deal (and I should have provided more detail up front). For a short while I actually had both the d7200 and the d750. Great while it lasted but I had to downsize. Basically, I had to choose between the d750 or the 70-200, and I chose the 70-200. The 70-200 is flat-out amazing, the d7200 is very solid, but I'm coming to the conclusion that Elijah has it right:

The problem is that the 70-200 VR II is so damn good, I hate to give it up.

So I guess the question should have been for the uses specified, would you choose DX with the 70-200 or FX with the 24-120/85 1.8g?

save up until you can afford the d750 and the 70-200. Buy once, cry once.

If you don't need f2.8 (and I'm betting your don't), the 70-200mm f4 is every bit as good and is much more compact. As for FX/DX, I was using D7100, bought D800E (and spent nearly $6,000 in lenses for it.) Honestly, not one of my customers can tell any difference at all between D7100 and D800E until I start making 16x20 enlargements. Last summer I went back to DX for family outings etc.--bought a used D3300 and a Nikon 16-85mm VR. Not one person seeing the photos can tell I'm now using a different camera. Not one. I just got tired of hauling bulky camera gear around. I did look at using a 24-120mm VR on the D800E, but after using really great lenses for the past two years I knew I'd never be happy with it. If I had the cash I would have bought an Olympus M43, but I bought an expensive antique lens (c.1851 Petzval) instead. FX is mostly hype. The little D3300 I bought for $250 takes technically better images than the Hassleblad 500CM I was using for weddings just ten years ago. (Wish I still had the Hassleblad.) Anyway, I've come to now think that the biggest improvement in my own photography will come from skill with software. That's where I've been putting my effort lately. The hardware is becoming unimportant.

Here's a DxO comparision of D750/24-120mm VR to D5300/Sigma 17-50mm OS (DxO did not have D7200 listed, I assume D5300 sensor is same or similar.) Note the difference in sharpness between the Sigma lens and the Nikon. A D7200/Sigma 17-50mm will deliver better image quality, and for less $$.
