p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · How many people own BOTH the 58mm and 85mm 1.4g lenses?

I really love the Nikon 85mm 1.4g which I currently own. However I also really love the images on this forum taken with the 58mm 1.4g. Did anyone replace the 85 with the 58? Anyone have both? How similar to people find the two lenses in the field?

Is the 58 more suitable when paired with a 70-200 compared to the 85?

I have the 58mm and 1.4/85mm D (the 'old' one)

I find I much more prefer the 58mm over the 1.4/85mm (and the 85mm focal length in general, apart from the 1.4/85 AFD, I over the years also have collected a 1.8/85mm Canon FL, 2.2/85mm Petzval, 1.8/85mm Nikkor H and a 1.8/85mm AF D, in the past also had a 2/85mm Ais which I sold)

I'm not very much into the 'which is sharper thing' (both lenses are sharp even at 1.4, and improve even more when stopped down somewhat) but I much more prefer the bokeh and image rendering of the 58mm.

Also the shorter focal length allows working much closer up to a subject ( I mainly shoot people) which creates a much more intimate atmosphere and closer contact then when shooting while standing further away

If I do want to use a longer lens next to the 58mm, I prefer my 2/135 DC.
Much lighter, more nimble, smaller, and less 'present' as eg my 2.8/70-200 (which to its focal breathing is much shorter then 200mm when used close up anyway) or 2/200 VR (great lens but a bit of a mood kill if you try to be discrete)

I still have both. I really like the focal length and the weight of the 50/1.4 but the IQ wide open with the D800 was disappointing. The 85/1.4 is fantastic, as you know, but for me it is sometimes too long or too short. So I find that the 58 combines a very useful focal length and a fantastic IQ for portraits. Even if I don't use the 85 as much as before, I cannot decide to sell it and it makes a very nice duo with the 35mm.

I use them both, but differently. The 58/1.4 has a sweet spot for medium distance and centered subject but the bokeh could be "special" according to the background, like the 50/1.4 Planar. The 85/1.4 just makes it disappear nicely, whatever it is.

I dont like to have too many options at the same time so I never have both in my bag at the same time. It was the same when I had the 70-200. According to the different focal lengths, the 58 seems more appropriate to pair with the 70-200. However both the 58 and the zoom require some distance.

I had both for 6 months or so. I really wanted to love the 58, but just couldn't get used to its softness and sold it. The 85 is a keeper (gorgeous bokeh AND sharp where it counts), although the new 105 has me thinking…

former primes 20 28 58 85 1.4
current primes 24 58 105
with a zoom on either end

58 and 85 was redundant for me
the 85 was sharper, with nice creamy bokeh
but the 58 was special, swirly more artistic bokeh
with the 58 you need to be careful with your FD, if you do, you can make sharp images.
if sharpness really matters to you, you can stop down, and still make delish bokeh with the 58.

I had both and sold the 85 1.4.

Different lenses IMO, but I was using the 85mm much less often after buying the 58mm so I sold the 85

I have the 85/1.4D and the 58. Different lenses for different situations for me. But if I had to sell one it would be the 85 since the 58 is more versitile (for me). I've owned tje 135DC but sold it to fund a D3 back in the day. Also owned the 200/2 but sold it because it's size was a very limiting factor. Also I tend to like and use shorter focal lengths. Now downsizing to 28/58/85.

I think the 58 is special but as far as sharpness goes both the G and D versions of the 85 trumps the 58. As always YMMV.

Exactly my experience.
I had 24, 35, 58 and 85 (all 1.4)
Now 24, 58 and 105

It is as I suspected, so many people have gotten rid of the 85!

Old set: 24, 58, 85 (all 1.4G), and 28 1.8G
Current set: 24, 58 and 105 (all 1.4)

Same as some others 85 seemed too close to both 85 and 105

Used to have the 35 50 85 prime setup but once I got the 58 I reevaluated everything and now carry the 20 58 and 105m instead. I almost always use the 58 if I can. I just recently got the 20 and like it a lot so I think I have the perfect setup for me. I just never would use the 85 once I got the 58.

I have 58, 85 and 70-200, and to me they are different lengths/lenses for different purposes. 58mm serves better in tight spaces, 85 does better in larger spaces, 70-200 for longer, well-lit spaces. That's just how I see it, for my purposes shooting weddings. There are occasions when I want more or less environment in people/portrait photos too, and different focal lengths may get used depending on what I feel serves better for each instance.

It's all situational.

The 105mm is a very tempting lens indeed, but I think it would be too long for most of my uses, especially with no VR.

Well guys, I just went to exchange my 85mm 1.4g and put my order down for the 105! I might end up adding the 58mm down the line too.

This thread helped put me over the edge I think!

I definitely have lenses I use more than others (I think we all do,) and since I got the 58 f/1.4G, I do think I use it a little more than when I used to have just the 50 f/1.4G because the little bit more compression really does make it even better for portraits IMO. With that said, I still use the 85 f/1.4G a good amount for portraits and just added the 105 f/1.4E to my bag and have found that to be great for portraits as well. I use all my lenses at least a couple times through out a wedding day, so to me, they are all "needed" with my shooting style. I use D750's and a D7200 and only put the 85, 105 and 70-200 on the D7200 for the extra "reach." I don't care for shorter lenses on it because I prefer the compression of 85mm and up, I just like a little more reach and I LOVE the fact that the 85 f/1.4G for example has the field of view of a 131mm, the light gathering and compression of what it is, and the depth of field of an f/2...it's my way of getting around that fact that Nikon doesn't have a modern 135 f/2

How are you liking this setup now that you've had it for a few months? I'm think of going 20 (have) 58 (need) 2/135 ZF.2 (have), and selling my 24-70 and/or 85 1.8 to get there. I really like the 85 1.8 optically, especially how sharp it is, but the 85 FL feels too long and too short at times, so I think I'd be better with the 58 as a general walk around in between the 20 and 135 (and maybe supplement with 35 1.8g down the road).

I mainly shoot my kids and landscapes (when I can get away) on a D810.

My current setup:
14-24mm, 24mm 1.4G, 45mm PCE, 58mm 1.4G, 85mm 1.4G & 200mm 2.0 VRII.

I'm constantly annoyed at how close the 45/58/85 are in FL, but love the results from each. I keep getting ready to swap my 85mm 1.4G for a 105, but I used the 85mm 1.4G for nearly two years exclusively and have an attachment to it.

P.S. to me the 58mm 1.4G & 85mm 1.4G are VERY different lenses.

That's interesting re 58 and 85 being very different. Ideally the swap would be 24-70 for 58 1.4 and 85 1.8 for 35 1.8, as I recognize 58 and 85 would be very close. I just feel that if I went the 58 route I would use it to the total exclusion of the 85. I guess my real issue is the 85 feels just slightly too long for a walk around and 24-70, while great as a general purpose, is a little cumbersome hanging from my side chasing my kids around when on trips.

I sold the 85 and I had the 85 much longer than I had the 58. The weight alone was enough for me. But totally different lenses and the 58 was more 'me'

I totally understand, PS I sold my 24-70 for the prime set up as I hated lugging the weight of that zoom around (this coming from the guy that shoots a 200mm F2VRII 😂. As others have mentioned elsewhere on here, I don't like the 50mm focal length, but love the 58mm... point is, even though they seem close in focal length, the 58 & 85 give me very different looking results.

Thanks for the insight. Are you shooting with a D8xx or something else?
