The D600 is arguably IQ wise, but the D700 handling and build is better IMHO. If I was shooting something and I had to get the shot....I'd go with the D700. If it's for personal use and I can take my time....D600.

agree with you on D700's superiority over the D600 in handling, frame rate etc - my comments were more to do with sensor and IQ.

IMO any body other than another D800 is not a backup. It's a different camera.

My D810 backup is another D810. I use the two in varying ways. Sometimes I have one totally landscape dedicated and the other for wildlife. Other times they are the same...

For what a D800 sells for now, it would be a no brainer.

The other alternative is go with a DX body of some iteration, but that would only be for reach.

Another one for D600 (lighter, same batteries, great sensor)
D5500 is even more lighter, different batteries, smaller sensor)
If you don't mind to have only 35mm lens, try Sony RX1 or RX1R (very light, great IQ)
I tried them all, my light travel camera is Nikon Coolpix A (but if I have more $$ it would be Sony RX1R II)

How about spending a little extra for a second D800?

I'm all about the D800 but at twice the price of a D700 for a body I use 10% of the time? I'm not sure if it adds up or if it's a good investment. Keep in mind I'm no pro just an enthusiast.

I love using the D600 and the D800 but saving a little money by downgrading the the D600 to the D700 still seems like a good move. I loose a little IQ and I have to manage two sets of batteries but I can't really find any other faults.

Truth be told the best setup would be two camera setup exactly the same but I don't believe I shoot enough to justify such a setup.

Wow... I just looked in B&S forum and saw a D800 with 105k actuations go for $950. I guess at those prices I really should be looking at a D800.

I see them in the 11-1300 range with under 30k clicks. Hard to argue with that kind of pricing.

Fond as I am of my D700, the biggest appeal it holds for me these days is if I want to shoot in inclement conditions with a beastly build that won't break the bank if it gets beat around a little.

A year ago I thought I'd probably pick up another as prices continue to fall but now, not so much. The newer tech and megapixel size is just too appealing for me - and I certainly wouldn't consider a 700 if part of my priority was a lighter load.

To me that all means a D6xx.

D610 is $1,000 or less used and with 10K or fewer activations. It uses SD cards and the same battery type as the D8xx cameras. I would not want a camera that required a different battery type or used CF cards.

Same here.... but it doesn't fit the budget for the OP.

I bought a D750 as a backup for my D800, and my D800 now sits on a shelf

I ended up purchasing a D700 for a little over $600. For the price I think it fits the bill, at least for my purposes. Again the D600 is a great camera but I don't think it's $500 better then the D700 and for my limited use I think the D700 should work just fine. If I don't like it, I'll sell it and start over.

Sounds good! I'm still uncertain of your math on this, though. If you got a $600 D700, where are people buying D600s for $1100?? Most D600s are about $700 +/-.

The original poster was a person named Falconbach... Then a person named twistacatz takes over and we never hear from the OP again... It's like identity theft!

Hahaha...

Good comments on this thread. Another Nikon D800 would be an option if I weren't looking for lighter and smaller camera to serve as a backup. But maybe I change my mind.
Unfortunatly the used camera gear market here in Iceland is not so good and cheapest used D800 I can find is over 2k with about 32k shutter actuation.

Fair observation. My math is based on a new D610. Will see how the sell works out.

If the D800 meets your needs then save up for a second D800. You will have identical controls/cards/ batteries and will not have to change lenses as often. As for back up: If one D800 fails then you will be using the second D800 100% of the time.

Two identical bodies is the time tested method of the pros. I have two D5's and a single D800 (with battery grip (identical battery and vertical shooting for Hi-Rez, take your time shots.
