I've had v1 Tam 150-600, currently have v1 Tam 150-600 in a-mount, Tam 150-600G2 in EOS mount, Minolta 400/4.5, Sony 70-400G2.
You saw the Nuthatch posted above with the v1 Tam on the a99ii.
My Minolta 400/4.5 is a big disappointment (used/e-bay).
The TamG2 is way nicer build quality and the hockey puck for firmware update but I wouldn't buy it for huge increase in IQ....if it is better than the v1 it is just marginally so.
When I grab a lens in this focal length for the a99ii it is the 70-400G2. Tried, proven and sharp at 400mm.
Now, the v1 I own in a-mount is not my first. I did own the v1 in EOS mount but sold it when I added a 400DOii, I could crop with the 400DOii and beat the v1 EOS at 600. BUT the v1 in a-mount on the a77ii was different (and needed no firmware update like my EOS mount). I've kept the v1 in a-mount and will continue to keep it even owning the 70-400G2=there are times when I take a sacrificial lens, one I'd rather trash in this case saving the 70-400G2 which is a gem.
Will the a-mount TamG2 be better Won't know for a while; I just know my v1 Tam in a-mount was better than the EOS v1.
Will I purchase the TamG2 in a-mount? That is something I'm puzzling over simply because my v1 is really good, even at 600.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I wish the Minolta 400 4.5 would have been sharper, but that's the way it goes. It went back to KEH. Too bad, for only $1,350 I felt like it was a bargain find. Assuming I don't see some incredible deal for the G1 Tamron, I'll wait until the G2 Tamron comes out for the a-mount and decide from there.
Anyone have experience with those older Tokina 300mm 2.8's? Reviews seem to suggest AF is a little slow but IQ is ok. They appear a bargain though.
My quick thoughts on the A99ii after using it over the weekend with the Minolta 80-200 2.8 for my daughters indoor cheerleading...it feels like a full-frame version of my old Canon 7DII. I'm happy with it so far. As long as the lenses you need are of good quality and available in a-mount (which they are for me with the 80-200 & 70-400) I have no reason to go back to Canon with the 5D4, which is the camera I was considering along with the A99ii.
