If you're going to FF, I'd go with a 24-70 vs 16-35. It's a better focal length imo for portraits. If you don't NEED 2.8, the 24-70 F4 is a wonderful lens. The difference in price could get you another fast prime, be it a 85 1.8 or 100 2.

Yep im with this . the 24-70/4L is a great lens . its the only thing ive found thats equal or better to my old 17-55 I had on my 7D before I got the 5D3 . \\

if you stay crop then the 17-55 is a gem of a lens .

While I love the 16-35 f/4L IS, I think the new 24-105 f/4 IS version II would be more logical for your needs on a 6D.

Logical answer:

Sigma 17-50/2.8 ^ 70D + 6d ^ 16-35 = 6D ^ 85/1.8 + 6D ^ 100/f2

As close as I can get with this keyboard .. I didn't want to use "." for "and", so I got as close as I could.
Looks impressive through and expresses what I wanted to express ..

I would spend the least that you can and put the difference in a college fund.

Good luck.

With FF's bigger sensor you can shoot at lower light levels without a flash. This is a more candid approach I also agree with other posters that you will need fast focus as your child becomes active. I also suggest you fire fast fps bursts to capture kid action and changing facial expressions.

For FF your most used lens would be the 24-70. The 70-200 is useful for outdoor sports and indooor at a distant events. But FF cameras and lenses are EXPENSIVE. You seem uncertain about focal lengths. I have the Sony RX10 MKIII "Bridge Camera" with a 24-600mm lens. Tiny sensory so not as good at very low light but compact package with every FL except an Ultra WA. The bonus is it does excellent Video and has a silent shutter. All this for $1600 or so.

Just took his 10 month photos last night, and I was having a lot of trouble with the AF on my 17-50. Not to mention I hated having to rely on the bounce flash to light my shot. A lot of times waiting for the flash to recharge, I lost my moment with him making a cute face.

I'll post one when I get a chance.

This can be a huge issue when shooting weddings if fill-flash of any kind is required.

Just get a Godox PB960 or similar battery pack. Recycling is almost instant even on full power. They are lightweight and easy to wear on your belt unlike older Quantum type packs.

Your problem might then become the flash slowing down to avoid overheating. So either pace yourself or have a 2nd gun to hand.

Also bump up the ISO if you can obviously.

you have expressed a couple of objectives.
1. Faster and better AF
2. More control over dof.
If you stay with your current system, the only option to satisfy both is buying a prime. the simga 18-35 1.8 is notoriously problematic in AF (read dpreview). If you decide to stay with crop, host of options depending on your desired focal lenght, need for IS, etc. there are canon 35 f2 IS, original 35 1.4L (a bargain) 24L, 50, 85, etc.
If you go full frame, you can continue using a zoom. I find a midrange zoom to be most useful, a 24-70. I have several variations of this, but if you want better dof control. you are looking at 2.8. is cost is a concern, the old 28-70 2.8L is excellent, and can be had on the used market for 500 or less, but be ware, that if it breaks, canon wont fix it. I have the tamron vc, as well as the canon 2.8II. both are optically very good. Tamron is not as accurate or fast focusing. Not bad, just not great.
my 2 cents.

Pick up EF 35mm f/2 IS as recommended by kevindar. You have f/2 and IS, it will do well for both still and video on 70D and it is a good lens to have on FF (when you decide to upgrade).
70D it is like 55/56mm lens for FF, so it's nice because you basically gave 50mm f/1.8 stm to your sister.
*I think thinking about an excuse for you lol.

USM lens are faster, this is one of newer lens, it will play nice with Canon DSLR

You guys sure don't make this decision easy

My only concern with a prime at this stage is paying $600.00 to stay locked on one lens/focal range. If I were to buy a 6d and a 24-70 (probably f2.8), I would definitely offload the Sigma as I would be using the 6d/24-70 for all the work the 17-50 does now.

IMO the 16 35 is too wide on FF for a portrait lens. I would get the 6D and the 24 70 2.8 II because of the age of your son. Later when he gets older and you move outdoors for more portraits I would add the 70 200 2.8 II.

Agreed.

And if you want to save money - consider a used 5dii with a v1 of 24-70. Upgrade to an old 70-200 v1 . 5dii, 24-70v1, and 70-200 - 2.8v1 are all really good cameras for kids..

v1's are really good for kids. Weaker on the edges for landscape stuff but with kids it won't matter.

I'm at a loss at how much you wish to spend. Going FF means you need to rebuy glass and as mentioned FF glass is more expensive.

You want more DoF control. Your 70-200/4 doesn't give you that when shooting inside. It surely will when having enough light.

If you don't wish to spend much then my vote goes to the 17-55/2.8.

If you move to FF then I think you may want more than 70mm reach for your portraits. Maybe not now, but you will in 2 years time. A 24-105 v1 can be great or even the v2 if you can stretch it. But think about this: my choice if I were you would be a FF body and get a 24-105 v1 + 135L. By far my favourite toddler lens. Good to shoot indoors, especially on a decent FF body like a used 5D3 or a 6D. You will still be able to use the 70-200/4 for outside, but also inside @ISO1600 or 3200 on sunny days.

Oh and I suggest you get rid of your flash. Very toddler distracting and it kills the brilliance of your optics. Learn how to shoot against the light, brighten the shadows a bit and be amazed, even with a 24-105 @105mm wide open.

Good luck and above all, enjoy the delicious time with your son. I took a day off from work every week for 6 months to see my girls grow up. Magical.

I'm finding that since son has been born (he's almost 10 months), I'm taking a ton of portraits. My Sigma 17-50/2.8 lives ony 70d along with my Yongnuo flash. It does fairly well, but I want better sharpness and focus accuracy as well as more depth of field control.

I was thinking of adding the Sigma 18-35 art to the collection.

Then I started thinking about just buying a 6d and a 16-35. Obviously the latter will be pricier, but it would checkost ofy wishes of above. Not to mention it's am excuse to enter into the full frame world.

So, what would
...Show more

A fast 35 (35/2) and a fast 50 (50/1.8) and you're all set if using full frame. On a crop camera it would be 24 and 35. Everything else is too wide angle, too big, too heavy, or too pricey. You won't need another lens until your son is active in sports or a school play.
