That's cheaper than the ~US$650 that the old one is *still* retailing for- though with 'zoo lens' competition from third-party 150-600 lenses, I can see dropping the price (assuming this price is correct).

And at $550, I'd almost want it for compactness, despite owning an excellent 150-600 | C.

One thing this new lens tells me is that it isn't likely that the 70-300 IS DO isn't going to be replaced any time soon. If the new 70-300 IS II is optically sound, the DO is rendered useless in the lineup.

Canon should copy Nikon an instead offer a 300 f/4 IS DO and maybe even a 400 f/5.6 IS DO

I wish the LCD had a mode for showing the focus distance and DoF as plain numbers. That would be really useful. The graphical imitation of the mechanical scale looks like a first iteration just not to scare off conservative buyers.

The optics seems to have been improved for CA and contrast at least, according to the example showing the effect of the UD element. From the MTF curves it looks to perform more evenly across the frame. All this is very good for landscape use.The center sharpness compared to the old one is difficult to judge from the MTF, a very high MTF on paper does not always carry out in reality.

All in all it seems a good upgrade at a reasonable price, I am preordering.

I agree. Hopefully, there will be alternative displays available. It could even display the current focus distance (FD) and a theoretical DOF value, something like: FD 25m, +/- 0.42m.

So it could perhaps be perceived as sharper than the L but with less pleasant bokeh.

One thing i have noticed about this website is that one lens always performs better if its more expensive. Even a cheaper update with newer tech will perform worse than the old tech if that lens is more expensive.

That could be bery much in line with reality. But there is a complete lack of surprise reading those reciews.

The only thing I look at with that comparison is wide open at the long end, i.e. 300mm @ f5.6. The L version has the edge in the center but the non-L actually appears to be better in the mid-frame and corners.

(Ok, I did look at 100mm @ f5.6 also and the results are the same.)

In the spirit of the season...

If you only want a 300mm then consider a used 300/4. A previously owned one can be had for less than the 70-300 non L new:

Thanks, but no, I don't only want a 300mm (I have one). But I want a 70-300 zoom to be sharp at 300mm. The previous non-L version of the 70-300 isn't sharp at 300mm so if it's unusable beyond much over 200mm then there's no point in buying it; you might as well just use a 70-200.

This new version appears to be an improvement.

Over the other non Ls? Yes. Over the often lauded Tamron? Probably. But over the L? I think not...

You seem to only be interested in very specific parts of the lenses performance. I was commenting on the lenses totality. From edge to edge at any focal length. Since that's what you pay for...

Giving this lens a serious thought. Nee an inexpensive light FF travel zoom.
