Looks like the new Canon EF 70-300 f4.0-5.6 IS USM Mk II is on the way with leaked photos of the new lens which features a Digital LCD focus display window.

What's the purpose of the lcd window?
My venerable 90-300 is in dire need of an upgrade, I hope the price will not be absurdly high

It replaces the mechanical focus scale.

I am very curious about the optical performance, as the lens it replaces is already very good from 70-200 mm, and the L lens above it is not perfect either.

A new design.

It goes from a 58 mm filter size to 67 mm. Different optical formula. Close focus distance goes from 1.5 meters to 1.2, so it has a bit more ability to get close up shots. Great for taking images of bugs that sting.
It's a little heavier than the present version, about 80 grams.

There were some speculative rumor photos of the LCD display, showing a distance scale as well as some kind of graphic indication of the IS system at work. I'm not sure how you'd be able to watch that while watching the viewfinder but there it is.

Still lighter than the 70-200 F4 L IS. I am very interested in this as a stopped down landscape lens. In a couple of days we will see the MTF charts. The old and simpler design was very good in the sense that the corner performance was not cut off at the shorter focal lengths.

67 mm filter hopefully means less vignetting.

Mmm, Nano vs trad. USM. Again, I am hoping to see some positive reviews about this - be nice to see some good news for the bargain/budget end of the market.

Probably better IS than the current version, which is great in bright sun, but lacks a bit at 300.

I prefer the images of the 70-200 f4 non IS (haven't tried the IS version) in detail and color, but missed the IS of the 70-300. I did not miss having to restrict myself to 250mm or so and stop down to f8 to avoid chromatic aberration and softness.

I imagine this thing is going to go for north of $700 if not much higher. They certainly can't charge more than the $1200 or so the 70-200 f4L IS goes for.

Honestly, I would hope that the performance towards the long end has been improved. I mean, the present lens is a drastic improvement over the old 75-300, but it still suffers at f/5.6 at 300 mm. At f/7.1, it cleans up a good amount.

I can't gripe too much really. It isn't all that expensive as it stands now. We will see what the next version brings in terms of performance and price.

So lighter than the 70-300L. Anxious to see the IQ differences as well as price. If you can pick up a used 70-300L for similar money to a new one of these, I know which way I'd be going...

It is almost certainly going to be improved towards the long end at wider apertures. That is where such lenses are judged. With the experience from the L, I actually think Canon will nail it with this one.

having had the original 70-300 IS (not the DO) I would have been pretty interested in this lens . the original was a decent little performer . but not up with the Nikon which was as good (if not better) optically but had the better AF (whatever Nikon call their equiv of canon ring USM) and was just as cheap .
heck even Tamron did much the same as nikon for even less £ .

But now I have a 70-200/4 L IS i don't think i will be shopping for this lens .

nice to see canon doing decent consumer Full Frame lenses though (if they do actually do it )

I just hope they do a better job with the optics than they did with the 24-105 STM. And if they do, they're going to need to do a 70-300L II, as that lens will be optically surpassed- though they probably should regardless to bring it up to the 100-400L II standard.

One thing this new lens tells me is that it isn't likely that the 70-300 IS DO isn't going to be replaced any time soon. If the new 70-300 IS II is optically sound, the DO is rendered useless in the lineup.

It was never very useful to begin with, especially not for the price it was/is being sold for.
The old 70-300 non-L non-DO didn't look very enticing when I tried it out. The Tamron was/is running circles around it. Of course, it was entirely possible that the person whose lens I tried had a dud copy without realizing it.

I've got a 70-300 IS non-L. It will certainly not replace the 100-400 II.
But it has its usefulness. It is light, cheap, and relatively inconspicuous.

Very interested to see how this lens performs (and the price tag). It could end up being a very good option for throw in the backpack telephoto for hikes.

Given Canon's improvement with the 400/4 DO II, one would hope that they'd be able to realize the potential of the technology in a zoom- primarily, that means compactness, and hopefully without the loss of contrast seen in first-gen DO lenses.
