I pre-ordered one of these from B&H back when they became available. B&H claimed they would ship September 8th, but now no date is given. The firmware to support it on a 7DMK2 is now available.

Anyone heard anything?

Talked with Canon today: they don't yet have a projected shipping date.

There is internet chatter about Canon not having firmware updates for the 5DS / R but even if true it's not clear why that would limit sales to 7D II owners.

I've been checking for the 5DS, DSR firmware updates since the 7D2 update was released. Nothing yet.

I wonder if Canon's found performance or other issues transferring 55-85 MB files. I know that my CamRanger is basically unusable for 5DSR Raws and is pretty slow even for the much smaller 1D4 and 7D2 Raws I've tried.

If it's an issue with how one camera works vs another, Canon may well be trying to get the W-E1's firmware right before shipping rather than issuing an update later—or maybe the W-E1's firmware can't even be updated. I haven't seen anything about that.

I don't think any firmware will make 5DsR CR2 downloads very practical.

Significant other just received my copy of the W-E1 today as well.

I think it would be ridiculous to try to use it as the primary transfer method with 5DS/SR RAWs. I'm looking forward to use it for remote Live-View shooting.

The question is... the write throughput of dual-slot Canon cameras gets bottle-necked down to whatever slowest media is present. I wonder if the W-E1 will also do that* by virtue of just being present in the camera... or they can do some tricks in the firmware so that the W-E1 will be "ignored" by the media bus when the other recording media is being written to.

* the related question is: how fast is the W-E1's SD bus throughput?

W-E1 received. Firmware updated.

Works fine in the SD card slot ("card 2"), but not at all in a common SD-to-CF adapter for WiFi cards in the CF card slot ("card 1").

Works with Canon Camera Connect (as expected), but not yet with dSLR Controller.

No. Most probably because the 5DMkIII's SD bus doesn't support UHS-1.
