Thank you Jim and Ben. You are both correct that the second (2&4) image from each comp is the softer of the two. I tried to add a more soothing appearance to those in post as apposed to the "normal" sharp images as seen in the first (1&3) images. Seeing them uploaded here, they did loose some of the impact they have at full size.
And yes Jim, the burnt grass was not desirable but all the lawns look like that down here this time of year. I honestly had not even noticed this as I was focused on using the rocks as a leading line. The water is clearly not stagnant, the debris you see is a bunch of bubble blobs trapped in a whirl pool area of the stream. Your observations are exactly why I like to get feedback from people. What we overlook or take for granted can easily be seen by others when viewing the images. And in this case those things I overlooked are negatives which is never a good thing.
You both picked the composition that I also prefer. I was thinking that the mill became too small of an element in the first image but I really like how I could use the waterfall in the FG as an anchor. Two different compositions of the same scene with two different messages.
This was mainly a test run of a new place I just found. I plan on shooting this in the fall when the leaves change and the preferred composition (#1) will work better for that.
If anyone sees anyway to improve the composition in #1 let me know and I'll take it into account on my next visit this fall.
