That's a bummer. Someone along the service line (technician, delivery boy, desk clerk) obviously dropped it and did not care to check for damage. I feel for you. This should not happen to any repair but especially a pro camera. Keep us posted...

A person over at Naturescapes cracked the glass of his 1dxII sensor using the blue sticky and the suggestion was made to use the orange (Leica and Sony) since it is less sticky.

I have no validation of this, but wouldn't the gels leave some residue, however thin?

People swear by the product...I bought a kit a while ago, but haven't used it. Leaving residue was always my fear too...I won't be using mine with 99II until I test on some old cameras.

IMO sensor dirt happens WAY too often to be shipping a camera to a repair center to get it cleaned. I've done literally hundreds of sensor cleanings using very simple tools (PEC Pads and Eclipse) and have never scratched or otherwise damaged one. That includes 1DX and 5DSR sensors. Sure, you need to be careful but it's a dead simple job that doesn't take several days like shipping a camera to and from a service center. If the job has become rocket science for only specially trained people I'd pass on the camera.

Did they come spotless? My CPS contact told me that cleaned 1dx II sensors might still have a few specks that could not be cleaned...

the exact thing they said in Germany.
Came home and made a check immediately and indeed: not spotless.
I think the end is far away.

So they have a special machine to clean sensors, and still they are not able to make the sensor spotless. I wonder what oil does to these sensors when you leave the specks on there for a longer period.

Has there been anyone here that successfully cleaned their 1dx mark II sensor (not other sensors that do not have this 'coating') without leaving any specks or smears? Please share your experience.

Hmmmm....this is a serious issue. I am to pull the trigger on a new 1Dx2 tomorrow (last date before October 1st to get the CFast card and reader for free). It may take them some time to work this out as maybe the sensor surface needs to be redesigned (altered) or even replaced. Massive call back, not economically pleasing to the company.

Gust can you confirm whether the remaining residue is visible in the images or not?

Thanks, Ralph

Oh no, THE 1DX mkII cannot be cleaned with a machine!
This is what they said yesterday.

Residue is not vissible in the images.
Dust and speckles only by > f22

The big risk self cleaning is, they told me, if there is dust on the sensor while cleaning, emediatly scratch the sensor.
That's the problem. The coating is much to soft.
I really think that canon can only takle this by changing all the sensors.

Berend from CPS told me about this special machine that cleaned 1dx mark II sensors in Rio is also used in Germany, same as TechRepair told me.

I started to notice the spots from F9 and up.

Thanks Marcus and Guus. F9 is not good. Don't use it much on a sports camera, but if I want f11 or f16 there should not be trouble. I will call Berend about it tomorrow to see what he can say about canons plans to tackle this issue.
I read somewhere that by time the oil will not leak as much as it consolidates. As the oil spread is most likely to occur in hot conditions due to high viscosity, buying after the summer may keep everything cool enough so there won't be any problems now or by next summer. Does that make sense?

This issue is of concern to me as well. Please do share the results of your conversation with Canon representatives.

This seems very bizarre of Canon. I don't know any sports photographer or photo journalist in general that wants to ship bodies in to just have the sensor cleaned. The 1D series is built to be used in all sorts of weather and conditions. The user needs to be able to clean it.

Well apparently this sensor can be cleaned by you or by the local Canon service facilities no problems unless there is oil on the sensor.Additionally, cleaning with swabs and fluids can get you in jeopardy if there are dust particles left on the sensor prior to the procedure.

We can keep expressing our feelings that these bodies must be user cleanable in the field and serviceable by local Canon service facilities but the fact is this issue is real so we need to deal with it. I hope Canon can find a solution quickly. Whatever information we can add here will help others.

I've owned two 1DX's, wonderful cameras but oil slingers of the first order. Yes it happens less if one shoots only on "L" speeds, but what fun is that. Slowing from 14 to 10 fps isn't likely to make much difference. I'm about to clean both sensors on my new 1DX II's. I agree with Dee Howie, and at the rate Dee and I use our cameras, the cost of the bodies would be eclipsed by Fed -Ex charges in short order.

I had along conversation with Visible Dust, my supplier for years, and they feel confident that the techniques I have been using for lo these many years will not put my new sensors at risk. I cannot conceive of burdening myself with a billion cloning mouse clicks because of the condition of my sensors, nor can I imagine packing them up every two weeks and shipping them off to Canon.

I'll have a better grip on this whole thing by noon tomorrow after I have sanitized my XII's and my 5DSR's.

Guess what, you send in your camera for a sensor clean.
Camera returns with a complete bent battery housing! Slot doesn't take any battery because it is bent. Called CPS again, looking for a solution...

I'd ask to keep the unused loaner, since you fill its better than yours.. After all the trips to Germany... You never know till you ask
