High school football, thought I'd have some fun with a 5ds, 1d4, and 1dx along with TSE 17, 70-200, and 300 f2.8. Borrowed 5ds + tse from Canon and threw it in the bag to see how it does at night sports. Conclusion, not good. The resolution is freaking amazing, the amount of cropping power is awesome almost to point where you could probably sit in the stands with a 70-200 and produce good shots. Two noticable issues with 5ds and sports, just like the 5d3 it just can't acquire and maintain AF fast enough compared to 1d4 or 1dx, second the buffer takes forever to write. The 1dx just snaps to focus, and the 1d4 while slightly behind is just dead on accurate. If the 1d4/1dx has OOF, it's operator error, period. Just don't really get alot of oof shots with either 1d body, but both 5d3 and 5ds act very similar with AF in low light.

If the 5d4 is equal to 1dx and close to high iso, the lower fps I could make work with sports at night, 1d's AF just rule so need to chance oof. Another point about 5ds + lightroom, you can really crank up the luminance so nearly 2x vs a 1dx to get a smooth image. The 5ds really needs a performance update, faster AF, high iso, and bigger buffer but that camera isn't for sports imo. But during the daytime, the AF focus in ai servo was definitely spot on. A few shots I picked out between all 3 bodies.

Nice action but I'm not sure why these look so noisy. Were you shooting jpg and pushing them in post?

Can you tell me more about your 3 body "work flow"? 2 bodies seems easy enough to manage, but how are you dealing with that 3rd body that night? On a neck strap? Next to you on the ground?

Just held two at a time, third in a small backpack on my back. If I had to keep that 3rd body close I'd probably find a body strap or holster to keep them from banging into each other.

I don't know what the deal is with all the noise, something happened when I uploaded to imgur and referencing them. The originals don't have much noise after PP. Everything was shot RAW.

Nice action. Night football is rough -- can I make a small suggestion? If you are using LightRoom, get that adjustment brush and swipe inside the helmets and adjust the shadow slider. If you are shooting raw you've got a lot of detail behind those facemasks to work with. You will see an instant improvement. Don't overdo it -- take it to when you think it looks good and then back it off 25%. Human beings go to the eyes first try to make a connection with the subject. help'em out!
