DxOmark: Sony FE 85/1.4 GM has Otus-grade performance
DxOmark just tested the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 G Master lens. The results have placed it 2nd place in the DxOMark lens database.

The 85/1.4 GM is pretty much free of distortion, has very low CA and high transmission. Compared to the the Zeiss Batis 85/1.8, it shows similar peak resolution levels and similar sharpness at corresponding apertures. It delivers similar performance when comparing to Otus on a lower megapixel body. (36MP body)

"When tested on the full-frame 42-Mpix Sony A7R II body, the new 85mm achieved an excellent overall score of 49 (2nd place in the DxOMark lens database). Individual metrics were of course very high, with the lens attaining outstanding results for sharpness and control of distortion, lateral chromatic aberration, and vignetting."

According to DXO, the 55mm 1.8 is sharper than the 85gm, 85 Otus and 85 Batis, if I'm reading this correctly. Only the 90mm Macro is a little sharper. I want their copy of the 55.

This is awesome and confirms my finding using the 85 GM....it is simply an amazing piece of glass. I just went and kissed mine after reading this.

Yes, it's nice to see the FE 24-70/2.8 GM finally tested on the A7RII.

I have a feeling that the new Zeiss 50/1.4 ZA will take the throne, although the 55/1.8 won't be far behind.

I would agree that 55 is the sharpest lens I've seen.

Makes me feel better about buying the canon for almost half the money 😬. Wish it was native but still a great lens

Guess I will have to be satisfied with Miss Universe runner up!

We can be a spoilt lot sometimes.

While DxO gives you a better idea of how a lens sensor combo will perform as far as sharpness goes I put more stock in Rogers tests. They have their own limitations but he's transparent with them and I find MTF charts more informative than DxO's charts. Plus DxO typically only tests one copy of a lens.

Forget the overall score, it is useless. Look at the individual acutance profiles. They write that the GM is sharper close to the borders than the Batis, because they compare at f2.8. At all other apertures, the Batis is sharper in the center (at some as good) and as good close to the corners, according to their measurements.
The advantage of the GM is, in my opinion, not the sharpness alone.

Is there a reason they don't put the A7Rii results in the database proper?

They don't for the Canon 5DSR either.

Sony has really got something figured out. T/1.5 with this much glass? Both the 35/2.8 and 55/1.8 are T/2.8 and T/1.8, respectively. Sony is making the most ridiculously bright lenses in terms of efficiency.

I agree, that's incredible. We basically get the same transmission as the Canon 85/1.2L II:

It is a great lens, but there's nothing in those test results that should make you more comfortable about using it on an a7rII over the GM. DxO's test results are based on camera and lens combinations, and have very little to do with objective lens performance. All you can really determine from those tests is that, in DxO's subjective methodology of measuring performance, the Canon lens is better on a 50MP Canon camera than the GM is on the a7rII.

Same thing in the Otus versus GM test results. DxO feels that we can eek out 1MP more resolution on our 42MP camera with the GM than we could with Otus on the D800E. I'm not sure why that' s cause for celebration, since they're saying we're losing 6MP with the a7rII and GM where the Otus only loses 1MP on the D800E. I'm not convinced that makes them comparable, but, whatever. Yay, Sony.

The BSI sensor on the a7rII helps. I also have to wonder if the SLR lenses wouldn't test better by DxO standards on cameras where the sensor was only 18mm away from the mount of the lens.

Does it surprise me? No. It just proves that the stupid electronics company many Canikon users like to belittle, is capable of delivering some very high-performing and in some cases class-leading lenses .

Leaving aside the Minolta legacy, we of course have already known as much since the a-mount days (see 135 1.8 or 70-400G2), but unfortunately hardly anybody took notice.
