p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · m4/3 body for 4/3 lens - any real experience?

Hello,

today I took off the dust my old but amazingly beautiful Panasonic DMC-L1 camera, took a couple shots and even though very old technology the lens still astonishes me, the PanaLeica D-Vario Elmarit 14-50/2.8-3.5 Mega OIS, very sharp (nonetheless the sensor) and smooth with very nice color rendition.

The range of the lens is very good, I keep thinking I should make use of it but the Panny, even though beautifully built, with an amazing bounce flash and very good ergonomics shows its time and as such was thinking to give her a new body; the Oly E5 go still for a lot of money for such old tech, I know the OMD E-M1should be able to pilot the lens through the native adapter but I would like to know from somebody who did the attempt at driving a 4/3rd lens on a m4/3rd camera.

thank you

Sorry I don't have any 4/3 experience to share with you but Olympus here in the US is offering a terrific package deal for the E-M1 with the very capable 12-40/2.8 PRO lens:

I use 4/3 lenses with the EM-1, 50-200, 14-54, 11-22, and 50 macro. They work fine, focus a little slower, are very sharp, and are inexpensive used. The only thing I have found is that with the 14-54 the manual focus is very difficult because the focus by wire is very finicky. Otherwise focus does not bother me because I do mostly landscapes.

I have most of the Panasonic and Olympus m4/3 primes and zooms. I got the 4/3 lenses because I use two camera bags, a Panasonic one and the EM-1 outfit. I grab which either bag suits my fancy for the day. I got tired of the EM-1 bag missing essential lenses so I filled in the gaps with the 4/3's lenses at not too much cost. Works for me

The EM-1 is far ahead of any of the other m43 bodies in terms of performance with 4/3rds lenses. I've used 4/3rds lenses on most of the m43 bodies (I'm a big fan of the Oly 14-54 that your 14-50 was derived from)

With bodies other than the E-M1, expect poor to awful AF performance. With the E-M1 expect OK performance (probably a bit better than the DMC-L1)

The fantastic PanaLeica 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5 is my standard zoom on the E-M1, and it works very well indeed. It doesn't focus as fast as native m4/3 lenses, but fast enough for most subjects and it balances well on that camera body.

For static subjects, it works quite well on newer Panasonic bodies as well, particularly on the GH3/4. I've even tried it on the GM5. It focuses fine, but I wouldn't call it well balanced... lol

It will not AF on older bodies like the GH1, but it brings up magnification in the viewfinder when the focusing ring is rotated.

First and foremost thank you for your replies, very appreciated.

In particular I appreciate the last from Jurgen who uses my same 14-50 cos I think the 14-54 is newer and as such focuses in a different way (and better) on m4/3 bodies.

I heard a new iteration of the E-M1 is soon to be launched and if there will pop used ones at reasonable price it might be worth the pain even tho I have enough bodies (Nikon D800, Fuji X-Pro1, Fuji S5Pro, Nikon D2Xs, Panasonic DMC-L1) but that lens is a very nice one, I do really like how it renders on the old 4/3 7.5MP Panasonic sensor, I guess on a modern one it would do at least as nice and with regards to focus speed I am not behind speed deamons, if I need speed I'd use my D800 but am not really behind it cos what I like to do is candid portraits and some landscape, the use I'd like to do of the PanaLeica is a do-it-all, I was thinking to get a Sigma 24-105 for my D800 but it will become big and bulky, I better keep the 28-300 which is not that really bad and then find out how to satisfy my GAS with another body ;-)

Now is about to check how much is for a 9+ E-M1 body + 4/3 to m4/3 adapter ;-)

Grazie a tutti

Giovanni

p.s. any picture taken with the lens/camera combo Jorgen?

Used a E-M1 to drive the 150/2 Oly and it did really well with the PDAF system. Could it do fast-action sports? No . . . , but I used it for volleyball and it did just fine with practice. Sold the E-M1, but still have the Oly and am looking forward to how much faster (hopefully) the E-M1 MKII can focus this lens.

I use 4/3 lenses on E-M1 body a lot (with MMF-3 adaptor). It completely makes sense if you already invested into several good 4/3 lenses. My all-time favorite is 12-60mm, closely followed by 11-22mm and 50-200mm.
The difference with M4/3 lenses: focus may be a bit slower. Also, the focal point matrix is shaped like an oval, i.e. not full size, which sometimes makes off-center focusing more difficult. Otherwise, it works just fine, and in fact, I prefer 4/3 12-60mm to M4/3 12-40mm.

Sasha.

Many, and I'll look into the archive when I have more time later this week. Here's a couple that's online anyway. The b&w photo has been manipulated with Silver Efex:

42mm and f/4. I rarely use smaller apertures than f/5.6 with this lens:

Jurgen I love them all, thank you so much but now I have a problem, I gotta gather the 600+ bucks to get an OMD E-M1 and the adapter :-)

I do really like the colors, remind me of the nice times when I was using the Fuji S5Pro, thank you so much and bravo for the pics, very nice!!!
